What is this in the trunk?

I read through 239 pages of the Owner's manual, and did a quick search on TIS, but I cannot find anything that discusses or references the item in the trunk of my F02 B7, underneath the trunk floor mat, located a little left of center, and above the rear axle.

The 2nd picture is a close up of the item in question...I can pull up on the metal cable, and it's spring loaded.

Can anyone enlighten me?

What is your model year? If it is prior to a specific date...and you have the little orange tool...it may be the manual release of the parking brake.

See page 71 (below)...I downloaded a 2013 F01/F02 PDF owners manual that describes how to use the tool to manually release the parking brake with the tool that was provided. Is the frame that has the release point circled in red the same thing that is in the pics you provided?

Great…mystery solved. Hopefully the previous owners didn’t lose the orange tool. Again at some point, BMW stopped giving/using the orange tool on many models.

My F15 X5 has a looped metal cable in the rear left side compartment that you’re told to use the screw driver to help pull the loop upward. And my f06 doesn’t use the tool or have an easy way to manually release the parking brake. You have to go underneath the car to find a screw that manually releases the P-BRAKE.

Just picked up the 2014 F02 B7 in EstorilBlau II Metallic as a project car given it's hard 10 years of service, I expected the tool kit to be empty...it did did NOT disappoint.

It's nice to know to NOT use the trunk feature to release the emergency brakes, as the Owner's Manual states it requires a Mechanic to return it back to normal.
