2016 BMW G11 7-Series engine lineup rumors: from 4 to 12 cylinders

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Quote:
Motor.es is citing an unknown German source who apparently shed some light about the motorization options in Bavaria's flagship model set to be offered with a standard wheelbase (G11) and long wheelbase (G12). The range will allegedly kick off with a 730i model packing a four-cylinder 2.0-liter (codenamed B48B20O0) only for the G11 in which it will develop 260 HP (191 kW).

The 740i & 740Li will get a six-cylinder turbo motor (B58B30M0) rated at 330 HP (243 kW) while the 750i & 750Li will offer an eight-cylinder (N63B44O2) with 460 HP (338 kW). The range-topping 760i & 760 Li duo will make use of a V12 6.6-liter (N74B66U1) from the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Wraith with an estimated 570 - 600 HP (419 - 441 kW) and updated for more efficiency.

On the diesel side, the report only mentions a 730d with about 272 HP (200 kW) but 740d and 750d will be offered as well. There should also be plug-in hybrid versions in the form of a 730e with approximately 275 HP (202 kW) and 740e & 740 Le rated at an estimated 400 HP (294 kW). These hybrids are expected to use a nine-speed automatic gearbox, an xDrive all-wheel drive system and offer a 37 miles (60 km) electric range in the 730e and up to 100 km (62 miles) in the 740e & 740 Le. The conventional-powered models are getting an eight-speed auto and xDrive on select versions.

Interesting but I was expecting more from the b-serie engines. Is the 30d going to be a 4 or a 6cyl?

I thought they retired the V12 for the 7er and was to be only by Rolls Royce? Isn't that the reason BMW had that special edition 7-Series with the V12?

EDIT: My mistake, the V12 is still being used in the 760i. Thought they were using a V8.

We predicted this, B58 @ 330hp

Going to need that 9 speed ZF on the 4 cylinder model just to keep up to pace.

With the V12 alive and well in the G11, here's hoping that rumors of a V10 in the next-gen M5 and M6 are true. It would bode very well for a return of a V8 in the next-gen M3 and M4.

The G11 730i is threatening to be the slowest BMW of its time when it comes out.

I would bet on it. The largest engine is typically sold as the flagship in US.

I think the smart money is on the 740d or 750i, depending on your performance needs; that diesel is seriously no joke.

I don't know about the V8.... The V12 is too much for me, and the V8 looks a bit weak. Not that it doesnt have enough power, its just the same engine which was in the F01, and I didn't like it as much as I wish I would. The diesel was a lot more satisfying for me, but I'm not going to buy a +100k car as a diesel. The hybrid looks interesting but is probably really irrelevant as the battery weight counters the lightweight build...

6 cyl. In US and Canada I guess it will be renamed as a 35d/40d.

False.

There has been a 730i/Li before (pre-LCI E65), and it made only 230HP. Even the LCI E65 730i made only 255HP. There was even a pre-LCI E65 735i with a 0-60 of greater than 8 seconds.

The B48 in the new G11 730i will make at least 260HP, if not 270HP. I can't imagine the G11 will be heavier than the E65, but even if so, it has a far torquier engine with a solid 30+ HP advantage to stay ahead.

Lastly, those driving a 7 series care more about the quality of the leather and legroom over the 0-60. It could be a solid 1 second slower in the 0-60 and I doubt that would hurt sales at all for that market segment.

Of course, I said "of its time", meaning among what will be the current model lineup, not "of all time".

But the history lesson is appreciated.

Ah, understood. I think the AT 320i xDrive is low-mid 7 seconds. I'm thinking the 730i would still beat that with it's 80-90 HP advantage, despite weighing 500-750 pounds more? I see your point, so am curious.

What debate? The B58 will output 330hp, I don't think there's much wiggle room other than the typical "but Audi and MB have higher rated engines!" complaint.

Make sense. The 30d should be 35d in Us/Canada if rumors are true. One funny thing will be the empty space under the hood of the 730i considering that the engine bay is design to carry 12cyl engines.

Noooo. Don't do it

The 330i/340i LCI thread a few days ago has already debated this one to death. (It basically decided that the B58 will be somewhere in the region of 300 to 375 BHP with most betting on 330 BHP having had all the M Performance vs new S4 vs new AMG Sport C450 arguments as well)
