How does the the whole hotspot thing work? Once the trial is up, do you have to get a SIM card from your own carrier or is everything done directly through BMW?

You'll need a carrier plan (and I believe BMW has standardized on AT&T for the US market).

Meaning I would have to contact AT&T on my own and get a SIM card, and then install it in the car?

The car's got a card. What you'll need to bring to the party after expiration of the free period is the following:

- Paid ConnectedDrive contract with BMW
- Paid Data contract with service provider (I believe it's exclusively AT&T, but I could be wrong)

If the above are in place, all you need to do is activate the hotspot capability via iDrive (My Vehicle / System Settings / Mobile devices / Settings / Internet hotspot)

Really appreciate all the great info and pictures jwestfield . These are some of the best/coolest pictures I have seen of the new 7. After sitting in a loaded up one a few months back, and having sat in the several of the new S coupe/sedan with designo or amg interior, I have to say IMO the 7 series is the best interior I have ever sat in by a long shot. Congrats on your! I bet it feels great driving at night with that beautiful cabin lit up.

Where is the SIM card slot in the car? Is it a normal ATT sim card?

There is no user accessible slot in G12 cars spec'd for the USA since they all come standard with option SA6NW (wireless charging). The SA6NW option adds roof mounted TCB2 (Telematic Communications Box) in the "fin" on top of the car -- an advancement first introduced in the F30 and now available in the new 7 Series. With this system, two integrated telematic antennas (TEL1 and TEL2) ensure strong LTE data reception. There's also an integrated backup emergency GSM antenna which now serves as a "hub" for the Wi-Fi hotspot in the car. The AT&T SIM card is located in this roof-mounted box and, therefore, is not user-swappable.

Extension of the trial period (and purchase of an AT&T plan) is all done via whatever device you've paired to the car.

Not that I'm trying to convince you otherwise, but I parked my current 2012 F02 next to a 2016 G12 at my dealership the day I ordered, and I've gotta tell ya, the differences are really profound when the cars are side-by-side. My F02 looks so... I don't know... bloated? next to the G12. The lines on the G12 are more crisp and purposeful... the front and rear facias are somehow more focused and just a little meaner. The sides of the car are less "slab-like" to my eyes. It's a great looking car.

^^THIS^^
If one goes by the BMW website pics of the G12, for example; they just don't represent the car well. IMO your description of the difference between your previous F02 and your new G12 is spot-on. The F02 does look bloated in comparison. The G12 looks more svelte (if you can call that big of a car 'svelte'), meaner/more aggressive, far more sculpted, defined and refined. Just the front end upgrade alone hits the ball out of the park and into the bay, IMO. Frankly, I hated the G12 exterior redesign until I got my eyes off the BMW website pics of it. YMMV, IMO, etc.
