BMW X1 or Lexus RX 350?

Looking to get some opinions from you guys. Currently driving an M235i and looking into getting a small-ish SUV for practicality and future needs (marriage and kids in next few years maybe). Had an X1 as loaner for a weekend and really liked it.

Only need basic car and use cell phone for navigation. The 2 features I really want is the reclining rear seats and HK sound. Talked to a few dealers and learned that there's no 2017 available with those features unless I go with more loaded ones. For the 2018, the tiered packages and options make it impossible to get just those features (must get premium and convenience).

This past weekend we went to look at the Lexus RX and I really liked it. Yes, it is slower and boring to drive but is super comfortable and plush. Would make a great road trip vehicle. The standard options are also very nice (has reclining rear seats, pedestrian detection, auto braking, etc.). Price-wise it's about $8,000 more than the X1. Which would you guys recommend? Never owned a Lexus but have owned many Toyotas and BMWs. This will be a long term vehicle. Girlfriend has a Camry so it's not absolutely critical that we need to buy an SUV. It'd just be nice for hauling and road trips.

Isn't the Lexus NX more closely matched to an X1?

My wife drove an RX for 12 years and loved it but switched to the Audi Q5 in 2011. I have a hard time with the grilles but it is a pretty popular vehicle.

I'd take a look at the Q3. (I prefer the Q5 to X3 and RX so presumably would like the Q3 better than X1 and NX.) If choosing solely between X1 and RX I'd probably go RX because it is bigger.

Ah, yes. Your post and @F80dreamer's comment reminded me of something I forgot to mention. We'd like to be able to fit 3 average sized adults in the back comfortably when traveling. Cannot do that in an NX as it's more narrow. GF who's petite doesn't even fit comfortably in the middle with a passenger on each side. X1 is a bit wider and can fit 3 well. Lexus RX a little better as well.

I think RX is the only logical choice between the two.

Another vote for the Lexus. Now if you were talking X4 M40i or X6, then it would be a different story.

Three adults in the back? Why is X1 even on the table? You are in X3/Q5/RX/Disco sport territory.

The X1 is surprisingly roomy in the back. It could actually fit 3, albeit slightly smaller than RX. Front seats in the X1 are a bit narrow and the interior is a bit spartan compared to the Lexus. It's more fun to drive, faster, and compact enough to park anywhere in town.

Why not the Q5? It's the newest in its class, will be a little more engaging to drive than the Lexus, and is very reasonably-priced. If you are willing to get the outgoing model I'm sure dealers have killer incentives to push out remaining inventory.

The new RX is a great car but I've driven the prior RX and it's a snooze-fest behind the wheel, and I bet the new one is no different. Plus the thing is ugly. Emotions aside though, it ticks all the boxes better than any other 'ute.

I'm actually surprised by that. I haven't been in an X1 but the X3 seems a little smaller inside than the Q5. I don't know the actual dimensions to compare so maybe it's just an optical illusion.

The new X1 is garbage compared to the old one. Do yourself a favor and drive the 35. It has the M235 engine. MUCH better machine. The new one is a gussied up mini.

I had thought about it. Audi's reliability seems top notch these days. Not sure how competitive they are on price. I can get a $46k MSRP RX for around $40k; not sure if a base Q5 Premium would be the same. I suppose I can check. But right now pretty much leaning heavily towards the RX. The one major complaint I have about the Q5 is the huge hump in the floor for the middle rear passenger. That would be uncomfortable for long distances.

My wife's X1 is about as roomy inside as the current x3 - the next gen will probably be bigger, but there's a lot more room in there than the GLA or other competition.

It's not a bad ride, stick a JB+ on it and always keep it in sport and sport shift and you can almost pretend it's not a FWD crossover. Get the Sdrive if you can, the xdrive is FWD 99% of the time and it's just extra weight you'll never need (this is not a car to offroad in)

I got 20% off on a brand new bare bones build.. you can get some great deals on them which puts them down to Jap EconoSUV price levels and under. If you're in the peninsula go to Peter Pan BMW and talk to Adam or Marcin and see what they can hook you up with

The last gen was a much better car in M package 35i iteration BUT it had zero trunk space and a smaller rear seat

You got $6k+ off an X1? Got my current car from Peter Pan and plan on going back to them if I were to get an X1. What is this 35i you speak of? The X1 only comes in 28i.

Resell value definitely the RX, however, after owning a RX350 for about 3 years I find it its FWD really annoying to drive.

last gen had the 35i with an N55 and hydraulic steering. Great little car but utterly useless for moving people and dogs.

I used the AARP corporate discount for 2500, a 6% MSRP discount and stacked a west coast X1 promo for 1500 on top of those. Not sure if they're still valid, but there's usually something on offer if you coupon clip enough. Adam is great for helping chase up on deals, can't recommend him enough.

Ah gotcha. With the 17, I get about $6k off including $2,500 corp discount.

No, the previous generation X1. Like this car. Will hand the new one its ass in every way possible. Only downside is it's a bit more wagon-ish if that's a concern for you. I prefer it but that's just me.
