G12 sales lagging behind

https://seekingalpha.com/amp/article...ries-collapses

i can see why, i love my 2016 g12 750xi, the ride is great but in terms of comparing with other $100k plus cars it lacks the sophistication and details, for example compared to the new s550 or s560. From seats to internal fit and finish I feel more could have been done with G11/G12. what do you all think?

I don?t necessarily agree in whole...in part I do agree if the 7 has standard equipment but a loaded 7 is quite special. I have Tartufo full merino and it?s amazing...the quality of the Merino leather is better than Mercedes easily, plus it covers every inch of the car...plus adding the Bowers and a Wilkins ties in the wonderful real aluminum bits throughout the cabin...and they light up at night...The ceramic controls are also very special and feels and looks more expensive than the Mercedes knobs... Alcantara headlining is a must and adding rear entertainment (those screens are amazing and the tablet control is cool) along with the sky lounge pano, it make the car feel special.

True it?s a shame most of this stuff isn?t standard for a 100k car but with all these things I can say it does feel more worth it at the $125k build level.

Wow. Please ignore any idiot who calls himself a "value" investor and owns Tesla, which has no PE. And, even though he won't provide any of his experience or qualifications, will likely point to the rise in Tesla's stock price to support the veracity of his claims.

It is perfectly normal for s class sales to drop since it is undergoing facelift this year. Moreover, the s class is slightly older.

Having said that, the market for this segment of car has been shrinking.

I'm not all that surprised. 2016 was the first model year for the G12, so it stands to reason there'd be a bit of pent-up demand by people like myself who owned an F02 and were looking to replace it with the latest model.

It'd be interesting to see the same comparison with the F02 -- first year sales (2009) vs. second year sales (2010).

I've been really enjoying my 2016 G12 750Lxi. As I've equipped this car (basically ticking all the boxes) it's very luxurious and, dare I say, fun to drive for such a large car.

Agree, I also think that all the manufacturers have further broadened their respective offerings and now there are micro segmentation for buyers to choose from which means that there will be less numbers for any one particular segment. (ie: new 8 series coming, new X7 coming, 6 GT, 6 Gran Coupe etc...which in the past was rather less segmented...you had the classic 'you can have any colour you wish as long as it is black' so choice was more limited and many other factors...

It would be good to see the year 1 through 7 of F series and trend line that and see how the G12 is doing...(also worth noting that in the UK the G11 is far more popular than the G12 so although US is F02/G12 it may be migrating to smaller cars as well?)

Anyway, agree with you, I also love my G11 and it is by far the best car I've owned to date, understated luxury and very happy with it as well.

I like to see fellow BMW drivers on the road, but I do not want every car to be the same. Let them lag.

SUV sales is probably what's doing it in fairness. Saloon sales as a whole are dropping.

Really great observation. There have been more entrants attacking this segment that was, a decade ago, pretty much owned by BMW and Mercedes (and, arguably, Audi and Lexus). Luxurious super-sedans head and shoulders above other mainstream marks, but a step below those of Rolls-Royce, Bentley, etc. Within the past ten years, we've seen the emergence of a rebounding Maseratti (Ghibli), the introduction of the first four-door luxury sedan by Porsche (Panamera), the rise of Tesla Models S and X, not to mention Hyundai's Genesis brand (G90, specifically) which has been garnering a lot of praise in the automotive press. There's a LOT more choice (read: competition) now in the $75K~$100K segment. It'll be interesting to see where BMW and Mercedes take the next versions of their super sedans in the face of so much competition.

BMW released figures of worldwide sales results for 2017: The 7 has increased 4.5% over previous year with 64,311 units sold worldwide. Not sure the consultant was correct...

In general, 8th record year in a row with over 2.088 Million cars delivered, 85,000 more than previous year.

The problem, as I see it, is one of cohesion.

The 7 is more of a same sausage, different length than a specialty vehicle.

Nearly all of the 7's features can be ordered on a 5 or possibly a 3.

Next, the super duper features that are available on the 7 are geared towards autonomous driving. In other words, these feature suck the fun out of the driving experience by disengaging the driver.

The end game for the 7 is pretty clear: the next generation 7 might as well be a taxi with the driver included.

Boring.

Very interesting article - follows from my post about no more G11 SWB - wondered if they are giving up on SWB due to low volume.
