Odd perspective. When I watch 1/2/3 I want to slit my own throat because they are horrible movies with horrible acting and horrible characters with overdone forced graphics/cgi. When I watch 4/5/6 I'm in heaven....

The plinkett reviews touch on this in a great way. Also Belated Medias "What if Episode 1/2 were good?" Videos are great too. Still waiting on episode 3 from him.

Looks like finally it's getting a hard edge and loosing the squishy jar-jar blinks bs that made the first one unwatchable and hurt many of the others.

One can hope but there is plenty of time before the release next year and we've seen only 88s of the movie so far.

Eps 1-3 were so far gone that I am not holding my breath.

Personally I thought 5 was best, then 4, then 3. 6 was ok except for the dopey ewoks and shambling pigs and cackling Jabba mini creature.

I think that those types of characters were Lucas' attempt to sell the new movies to everyone. Whereas the original 3 were produced for and marketed to a core audience, the new ones were like "it's Star Wars, everyone has to see it!" So you have silly Jar Jar and poop humor for the kids, angsty Anakin and half-naked ladies for the teen boys, female characters with extremely elaborate, constantly changing outfits and hairstyles for the girls and then Star Wars stuff too. I can't say that it worked out well though.

Agreed. He was trying to make them kid friendly. They all had that element a bit. First was r2d2 and c3po, then add in yoda, then ewoks. Finally adding jar jar to try to appeal to kids and minorities was too much. That's why he proctically vanished by episode 3. I hope they learn from this. The first movie is actually good if you remove jar jar and anytime anakin whines, which is pretty much constant. What I don't think they understood, or he understood, is you don't need a kid friendly character for kids to like it. My favorite character when I was 10 yrs old when it came out was a toss up between Han and darth. I didn't care about the bots or Luke really at all.

This exactly. Specifically, kids don't automatically like seeing kids in the movies because they aren't imagining themselves in Anakin's position. They are imagining themselves in Han or Luke or Leia's position: flying around the universe; kicking stormtrooper ass; blasting aliens in the Mos Eisley cantina with space guns. Yeah Luke always seemed really whiny to me but at least he was relatable. This type of character is called a protagonist and is essential to moving the plot. As far as I can tell The Phantom Menace doesn't even have a protagonist and in the latter two movies the protagonist isn't clearly defined because the acting was pretty bad and other reasons. None of the characters are relatable when we really need them to be, especially considering that the story takes place in a world full of aliens and spaceships and shit.

That shot of the falcon has me extremely excited!

I've always felt that George Lucas lacked a certain level of excitement in his shooting of action scenes.
In one of the extra discs in the blu-ray set of the six movies, there is a feature of Spielberg learning to use the software Lucasfilm was using. He shot his version of the Obi-Wan/Grievous fight, and it was so dynamic and exciting. That really cemented to me how important a director is to a movie. I've always imagined the jedi and space battles to be so much more than what we've seen on the screen

I'm excited to see what JJ Abrams will do.

This film WILL deliver. Absolutely no question about it!
Abrams is brilliant and he is NOT going to slack on such an epic franchise.

Isn't it funny that we can trust JJA more than the actual person that started this? Hopefully the rolling R2 is as silly as things get and we don't get Jar Jarred or Ewokked.

Lucas followed a basic formula in each of his movies. Above details 30+ things he did in each one. The new ones are supposed to follow th formula of marvel superhero movies. The main thing I think most people hate in them was the cutie crap of the ecocks/jar-jar-stinks he kept inserting against ever growing disgust of the vast majority of fans.

I hate to sound like this, but a lot of those things are just things that you do in any action movie.

If George Lucas made a Special Edition of the trailer:
