Would studless winter tires prevented all these crashes?

And yes the guy tried stopping with his foot.

That's awesome. And yeah, you can see how he had some control when he applied light gas / let the wheels rotate - that's lesson 101 in winter driving.

But speaking from experience, sometimes there's not a whole lot of options. In this case, there was it looks like from the video. But I was in a 96 car pileup on the highway two years ago and there was not a single thing I could do about it. I knew I was going to hit, I was in the fast lane, so I had no shoulder, and there was someone beside me too. So I just scrubbed off the speed I could, got it down to about 30km/h or so and was watching the mirrors. I also knew I was going to get hit, so after I hit the guy in front of me, I just settled back into the seat and waited. The only thing I was concerned about was whether there was a transport truck back there or not...there were a few in front of me so that was my only concern. All ended up fine, it was just a few cars that collided. But was a mess that morning was, tow truck drivers were loving life that morning.

But by far the stupidest thing I saw was the woman next to me - immediately after she hit, she jumped out of her car. Never leave the nice safety of a 4000lb steel cage when you are in a pileup. At least she started to book it up the highway to put some distance on it, but still - had a transport come through there, she could have been tossed like a rag doll. She was lucky.

No. Not unless you keep the tires moving, and even then, you might not, but you'll have a lot more control. Studded would have been the better option.

Real tires would have made a 'UGE difference. No-season tires are hard as rock in freezing temps.

They do have ABS, however it wasn't the greatest in that generation of Subbies. My WRX shares a platform with that generation of Forrester and the few times I've had the ABS intervene, it felt like the brakes gave out entirely. If I recall correctly, there was a TSB for some Subbies to have their ABS "retuned" back then.

It looks like this guy might have had a chance if he got back on the throttle and pointed up the street.

The funniest part of the whole video is the fact that there are three Subbie's all at the same spot

Haha, I was thinking that as well. Most likely they are all in the same boat, which is thinking they are superior to other cars on the road because they have AWD, but driving on worn out all season tires. Hopefully they learned the consequences of that action. I see it frequently around here; loads of people driving with a false sense of security.

The only thing AWD does is put you further into the ditch.

It's his first time driving a cage, so he's used to putting a foot down to help keep him upright?

That was the toughest reaction to overcome when I went on a snowmobile. "Do NOT put your foot down if you would like to keep it attached to your knee" I remember it touching once, just briefly, before I pulled it back in and we rolled over into a drift.

I don't know if you've lived in America but I've been told all season really works if you have a Quattro or similar.
I was also informed an Audi Q7 can handle everything with all seasons on.

I do recall mildly disagreeing to all above but since I have no calendar, or I've never seen rough weather, I can't truly comment on this, or on Audi.

Anyway, you need four wheels pulling and tyres don't matter. I've been told. To us they teach here to keep it on the gas so you cam steer the car but what do we know.
