Audio quality - source?
Putting aside debate about the quality of the system itself, has anybody determined whether they get better sound from (i) CD; (ii) ipod using lossles; (iii) usb stick using lossless or (iv) ripping to hard drive)?

I've tried playing lossless m4a (iTunes encoded) files from a USB stick but so far no luck. Mind you I haven't tried recently after all the software upgrades the car has undergone, so it's possible that it does support it now... will have to give this another try.
Anyway, the system would recognize the file and display the correct information in the iDrive screen, but it would not actually play the song. So I re-encoded about 7000+ songs in 256k m4a format and that worked. The 64GB USB memory stick allowed me to store just over 7000 songs. IIRC, there is a limit how many songs the iDrive system can handle... Quality wise, I doubt you would hear the difference while driving.
