1100 miles on a single tank
Joe Achilles just posted this video for covering a staggering 1100 miles in the G12 730d
Astounding, really. I have no clue why the US won't get these amazing engines especially the 740d which I've driven cross country in Germany and even the power and delivery doesn't leave you wanting on the autobahn.

Many (most) Americans don't like/understand diesel, and so they don't sell well here. Otherwise, BMW would offer it. I had a loaner F10 540d (Canadian) for a few days, and other than the excellent gas mileage, I couldn't tell the difference.

I can imagine how beautifully clogged the DPF filter with soot with such a driving style and its drastic reduction in service life

That is indeed a G11, that may have helped with mileage a bit. Don't think the car will come near feeling as good as a V12, however I think there is some legacy marketing issues with diesels being "soot chuckers" and also diesel gate . In reality I think the 3.0d releases about half the co2 per mile vs your V12. Something for the tree huggers.
Wow, those replacement filters are expensive! There's no way anyone would practically drive that way, well unless you were making a YouTube video trying to make a point. But even if it went 8-900 miles I'd be able to drive straight to Toronto or New York without a fill up. Not to mention, save a few coin while doing so in the current fuel price scenario.

It's a shame that diesel is falling out of favour due to environmental concerns as they have in the last decade proved them selves to be very capable and they have been cleaned up considerably
They are however not suited for everyone and continual short cold journeys are not a good idea due to clogging up the dpf. Had a f10 530d previously and liked the engine. Different character to petrol of course but the low down torque is impressive along with the fuel economy |

Diesels are comparatively more expensive and unreliable due to the complex emissions systems.
Diesel fuel is taxed at a higher federal rate vs gasoline. Leasing is the primary method by which BMW wants to sell new cars in the US market. All in all diesels don't fit very well in the US.

The 740d engine is just fantastic in my opinion (I have had other VW group 3.0 diesels and 4.0 and 4.2 V8 Jaguar Petrol, and it trumps the lot). It is powerful, and regularly gets over 850 miles between fills, and when road conditions force it (average speed cameras etc) I get even more. In sport mode on country roads, the acceleration is blistering, and makes passing traffic really easy. The onboard trip computer MPG is about 3 MPG too generous. My average since new is almost 45 MPG, and on a tank containing 4 x 100 mile trips, the majority stuck at 50-60 MPH, that tank was 49.8 MPG (onboard trip reported 53.2 MPH). When I had the V8 petrol’s , I felt as though half my life was spent in gas stations.

Diesels we're making a come back in the states. And then VW happened…and that completely killed the market. Now combined with diesel being so expensive. Never going to happen.
