EMF (Electromagnetic Field)

Has anyone noticed that there is a high level of EMF (Electromagnetic Field) on the passenger side of the interior of the new F01/02? I visited my dealer with a milligauss meter today and observed readings between 1.5 and 2.5 on the driver’s side and between 7.5 and 11 on the passenger’s side. Thanks, JD.

Hmm, just out of curiosity, WHY would you go measure for EMF in a car?

Paranoid, just plain bored or are you hunting for ghosts?

Yes, I know, a little out of the ordinary, but my family is somewhat alternative when it comes to health. What prompted me to check was whether or not I wanted to order a car with rear entertainment (LCDs give off EMF - as do, cell phones, microwaves, etc., you get the idea). When I saw how high the level was in a car with rear entertainment, I wondered how high it would be in one without. All in all, they came out about equal. Check out this article Re. Hybrids and EMF: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/27/au...les/27EMF.html. Also, this provides a good primer on the matter in general: http://www.alexstark.com/articles/El...20Home%202.htm, which states that levels should be under 2.0, when exposed for prolonged periods of time.

Yeah I figured it was something along the lines of what you explained.

I am a electronics engineer by trade (I design telecommunication systems for a living) and spend enough time in test chambers as it is...

IMHO in the kind of society we live in, you can't really escape constant EMF bombardment. Considering the amount of time you spend in the car compared to say carrying around a cellphone, iPod, PDA or any other electronic gadget, the amount of EMF exposure in the car is negligible. Standing in front of a microwave oven watching your food getting hot is by far worse than sitting in your car

I agree in part and disagree in part.

I agree that its becoming more and more difficult to escape exposure, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t do our best to minimize exposure. I’m not as concerned with low level exposure for long amounts of time as I am with high level exposure for intermediate periods of time.

As far as I know, iPods and PDAs give off next to nothing (though, not so for their chargers/adapters). On the other hand, Cellphones are more of a moderate concern – depending on many factors, including: call duration, signal frequency, battery level, distance from body/vital organs, etc., plus they give off next to nothing when not in use (no connected call/data transfer in progress). Yet, sitting in a car that it wired/shielded badly (definitely the case with hybrids because of the amount of EMF they give off) can be as bad as or even worse than standing in front of a microwave for 5 minutes (which is very bad).

In all, I certainly understand your perspective – I am not a freak about not using my cell phone – but I don’t want to be strapped to a ‘microwave’ for a 1 hour drive either.

Since you’re in the industry, it’s pretty amazing, California and Maine may become the first states to require manufactures have warning labels on cell phones, stating that they may pose a health hazard. Maine’s bill didn't garner enough votes recently, but the legislature is planning to retool it to be more specific; warning against pregnant women, children (skulls not yet formed enough to deflect emissions as well as adults), and the elderly from using same.

Anyway, I think I'm still on track for a 7er.

And, do you happen to know the the release date for the VZW iPhone!?!?

I for one don't think you are crazy and have thought about this exact same thing as I purchase cars. People don't realize that increase in technology and chemicals in our food and the increase in cancer rates cannot be ignored.

Anyway, just for your information, the passenger seat on the 3-series is awfully high too. I don't remember exactly how I but I remember multiple threads over in the 3-series forum and ///M3 forum about people who have measured it and how its much higher in the passenger side then driver side. BMW might be getting lazy or cheap with their shielding, but who knows.....its definitely something the manufacturers must crack down on, and if not, perhaps it might take the gov nudging them a bit

Cheers,
