USB Map Update

Hi guys,

I am having a little trouble with doing a USB map update, and feels like I must be missing something obvious.

I have used the BMW download manager to download the 2022-1 update for my car. I have copied it from my downloads folder to a brand new 64gb Kingston USB stick. File is definitely on the USB stick, with same number of bytes etc, but when plugged into either USB port in the car, absolutely nothing - and I understand it should be auto recognised and ask me if I want to update.

I have checked in Media, and it can see the USB stick (although it hasn’t got any song files on), I have tried reformatting the USB stick as both FATex and NTFS (I don’t have a FAT32 option), and also tried different block sizes from default to 4096, but still nothing.

Current base version in the car is 2017-4, although it does have the most current over the air update installed.

Any suggestions please?
Thanks
Mark

Does your car have current map update subscription or a lifetime FSC? If so, I would try to put some mp3 on the USB to make sure the system can read them first. If the media files are playable, then there may be issue with the map update. Try downloading from a different source.

Thanks - yes, I have an active Connected Drive subscription for everything except Concierge, so over air and USB. I don’t think that is the issue, as I had an over air update last Saturday.

I will try and put an mp3 onto the stick, and make sure it can be read.

I don’t really want to try alternative map sources, as that would take me away from BMW support, as the Map download was allegedly linked to my vehicle - had to log in to Connected Drive to do the download.

This is a tomorrow morning test now, so will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

Just managed to test this. I put an mp3 on the same USB stick, and I can see it and play it in Media, so USB stick is working properly.

In the US the maps are divided into multiple regions: when my 2016 G12 and 2018 X3 updated the maps OTA (while the vehicle had an active subscription), only the regional maps were updated while the base version stayed the same; however, by using the USB method with map packs downloaded elsewhere, I was able to update the enitre base.

It shouldn’t be ‘a file’ if it’s like mine. The download manager creates lots of folders and files when putting them on the USB stick when I do it.

Problem solved. Download Manager timed out/crashed, as I left it downloading whilst I was out. It did not complete the last step to unpack the downloaded file onto my USB, but had fully downloaded the file. I knew no better, and just copied the downloaded file onto the USB. Documentation seems pretty sparse in this area, so didn’t know what I had missed.

I deleted everything and started again, and this time was around as the download/verify finished, so was able to select the USB to unpack to. It has now successfully installed. Phew!
