2017 RUF CTR - Yes Yes Yes

http://www.autoblog.com/2017/03/07/2...d-porsche-911/

Something to bring Porsche kicking and screaming closer to a mid-engined 911.
Quote:
What you're looking at right now – the 2017 RUF CTR, which makes its debut at Geneva – is a radical departure for a company so closely tied to Porsche. Some past RUF creations have utilized more heavily modified Porsche chassis than others, including 2007's CTR3, which combined a Porsche front chassis with a custom rear subframe to make it a mid-engined car. But the 2017 CTR's non-Porsche chassis is new ground for the company.

The occasion is the 30th anniversary of the debut of the original CTR, the Yellowbird, which was a heavily reworked Porsche 911 Carrera with twin turbochargers. As we mentioned last week, its performance was superlative, slightly slower to 60 mph than a Porsche 959 but with a higher top speed, according to Car and Driver period test results. There's not necessarily much about the Yellowbird that informs the new CTR, other than twin-turbocharging and to demonstrate what the company can do.

The new CTR certainly sounds impressive. At its core is a carbon fiber monocoque structure, which is a RUF job. Attached to the monocoque are steel crash structures front and rear. The lightweight chassis allows the finished car to have a dry weight of 2,640 pounds – what the more commonly understood curb weight will be isn't clear. Unlike the CTR3, RUF claims the '17 CTR will be a rear-engine layout.

That engine is a 3.6-liter Porsche-derived flat-six, twin-turbocharged and making 700 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque. It is rear-drive only and exclusively uses a six-speed manual transmission. Its performance is suitably impressive: It takes 3.5 seconds for the CTR to hit 62 mph, and 9 seconds to hit 125 mph. Its top speed is 225 mph. Handling is provided by double-wishbone control arms actuating pushrod shock absorbers. The front brakes are six-piston fixed calipers; the rear are four-piston units.

The interior has its priorities straight for a low-production special aimed at true believers. It's explicitly analog and minimalist, and also lightweight. There's a lot of Alcantara and carbon fiber for weight savings, RUF says, and analog dial-type gauges for a classic look.

If you want one, you'd better already have a foot in the door. RUF's making only 30 of them. There's no word on US availability, or pricing, but limited-production cars like this tend to sell out right about the same time they're announced. To give you an idea of what to tell your accountant to prepare for, the CTR3 sold for right around a half-million dollars a decade ago, and we doubt this one will be any cheaper.

No more mid engined than a 964. Would take a Singer over that goofy looking thing all day, every day.

Although I used to work near RUF, and the sight of them getting onto the Autobahn for a shakedown run was always impressive.

I agree, but suede doesn't really photograph well IMHO. The dash is missing contrasting stitching for sure.

I'm sure for the 30 cars they're making you can customize the interior.

Very cool.

So RUF is not using a Porsche chassis on this. New territory. Interesting.

I've been saying for years to just make a 911 with a mid engine and make it look like a 911. The rear engine chassis is a limit that takes ever increasing amounts of tech, money and wider rear tires to stay competitive. It's not the best chassis layout, although they've made it work. Even Porsche knows this with their super car carrara and 918s...

This looks like, well, I wanted to say a million bucks, but it looks damn good.

No they are not and they are actually going to have a legal battle with PORSCHE over this because while it is not technically a PORSCHE it looks an awful lot like one. RUF you have some "Splainin' To Do". Don't get me wrong I love it and would kill just to drive it.

I am quoting the article referenced in the 1st post:

"But the 2017 CTR's non-Porsche chassis is new ground for the company."

I doubt there will be any legal issues, as well.

They are not calling it a PORSCHE, I agree. But the likeness is another story. I am sure that we can all agree that it looks exactly like a 911 which is certainly a copywrighted design. There is no way they are gonna let RUF just copy the design and get away with it. I a willing to bet that PORSCHE did not license the design to them either.

That's just horrible. For $750 000 I would take a 488, 570s and gt3rs over this.

Ruf cars have historically looked like Porsche 911s. There are likely no intellectual property concerns here, and if there were, I'm sure the RUF legal team has addressed any potential concerns prior to the car hitting the market or the auto show. If not, that would be troubling.

RUF is considered a manufacturer. They get their chassis "in white" from Porsche and create the VIN. They're very much like Alpina to BMW, AMG to MB before MB bought them or even Saleen or Roush to Ford.

They've been to this rodeo before, things will be fine.

Yes But all those cars started life as a true Porsche and were modified by RUF. This did not, they are not getting this chassis from Porsche they are creating it themselves. Listen I am a huge fan and love the car I just think that this is a different situation and am curious as to how they are able to produce this car.

I know that they are considered a manufacturer. Alpina and AMG are not and they are not changing the VIN numbers on the cars that they buy from the respective manufacturers. You can buy the replacement parts direct from the dealer, with RUF you can not. They are not creating the cars like RUF is with this one. They are still buying the car and modifying it. RUF is building it from scratch and it just so happens to look identical to a 911.

I meant more that they have a pretty solid working relationship with Porsche. They aren't going to get in trouble for building something that looks like a 964 while they're taking delivery of 991.2 chassis at the same time.

Any talk of Porsche getting mad about this car is silly. Singer has been at it for years now and no C&D has happened.
