F01 740i Owners: Thumbs Up?, or Should I Get a 550i xDrive Instead?

I'm a debating between a 740i, or else an xDrive 550i -- totally different cars, but which would you choose if you had to do it again?

7 series is a gem this time.

The 740 is a wonderful car.

However, I would ask that you decide between a 750xdrive and a 5 series xdrive.


If you live in an area where there is snow or ice then you will never regret the confidence of xdrive.

My 2011 750 xdrive handles like a slot car. I would expect the 5 series xdrive to surpass the 750 in terms of handling.

When you have the security of xdrive you will feel a level of security like never before.

if you cannot get the v8 7 series, I would go for the 550xi. The f10 is an amazing car, sporty, you can adjust the suspension settings just like the 7er, I would also choose the v8 all day over the 6.

I'm a new owner of a 2012 740Li and would say go for the 740. Seriously.

I drove the V8 and the ActiveHybrid V8 versions and ultimately decided on the inline-six. My quick analysis and experience can be found in this thread:
