Lol. I read in several books that sometimes you have to "burn bridges" in order to proceed. If you know there is no going back, the only way is forward. I am a little bit scared and uncertain but I have faith and I believe that things will work out for the better.
I hear ya......just keep on keeping.....new opportunities will arise for you I'm sure.
Good luck and enjoy the ride.

A lot of scared / complacent people in this thread... typically all that will lead to is 30 years of a corporate shit hole job looking forward to some crappy retirement where you won't realize until its too late that you're too old to enjoy it and wasted most of your life slaving away. OP, I am proud that you made this decision and got yourself out of a situation that you couldn't stand. Travel the world for a bit and find exactly what you like... If you have a comfortable cushion of money, you should be OK for a while.

A little bit about my past... I have done this twice... once walking away at age 25 from a 100K+ job and once walking away from a job where I saw no future. I walked away from both with no next job or no opportunity available at all. I simply had enough. I had a nice cushion of savings at least for that age ($40K cash) and traveled the world a a bit. Was I a bit scared? Sure... did I find other jobs? Yes, I found better ones... moral of the story, risk often has its rewards. I am an entrepreneur at heart and hope for that to be my next venture, if anyone here is thinking of that and is afraid to walk away from a job they hate... I have a hint, dont even bother... you won't be able to sleep at night. OP, I hope my story helps a bit and best of luck.

Thank you and thanks for sharing your story! It definitely made me feel more reassured. It's always a little uncomfortable to leave the familiarity but sometimes we need to expand our comfort zone. I know there are better and greater things out there for me to find. I just need to go toward it, one step at a time.

Rough itinerary in my head: Vietnam first, then Thailand and Cambodia, then back to Vietnam for another week or two, then Hong Kong for a few days, and maybe South Korea or Japan for about a week.

I will then either fly to Europe from Asia or fly back to the US, spend a few days here and then to Europe. I plan on backpacking around for a few weeks before meeting up a lady friend and her sister in Iceland for a week. I'll head back to the US after that.

Congrats. You did good.

For sure. I've thought about creating a blog but perhaps I should do it here. Easier.

Just found out today a coworker/friend is backpacking solo through Italy right now too. Awesome stuff.

OP - you have to be happy man. Life is too damn short to be miserable. Congrats!!!!

I was in the banking industry for 24 years and last year said "fuck it"....I couldn't take it anymore (too much regulation, corp political bullshit, et al). My largest client offered me a position to run his real estate development company and one year later.....I absolutely love it. Took a 20% pay cut in base pay but I am 100% happier. I will get some % ownership in future development projects so from a compensation standpoint, I will be better off in the long run. I answer to him (owner of company) and him only and manage a staff of only 8. My suits and ties are collecting dust and I am wearing shorts/polo shirts to work and I couldn't be happier.

I have heard from a lot of people who wish they had taken the time out for themselves before settling down. I figured this is a good time as any to do this before having a mortgage, wife, kids, etc.

Thank you. And Wow, 24 years?? It's pretty awesome that you left it though. I just talked to a coworker who has been with the company for 15 years and wishes he could just take off for a while too. He has other responsibilities (like mortgage) so he can't just leave it all behind.
