My 2009 335i sedan (was: Keep F30 or ?)
So I've had my f30 for about 14 months and put roughly 30k miles (2015 drove to Chicago and NY twice). I've always liked the older e92 335's but am aware of the HPFP issue on the earlier models and wastegates. I'm going to look at a 2008 with 70k and wondering what I should look out/listen for? Also I've considered crossing over to the dark side at 2013 C classes . Thoughts on the c250/300's? Known issues? My wife just got a CTS coupe 3.6, not the CTS-V as she's got a heavy foot like Brian Earl Spilner and will blow herself to pieces. Now I'm thinking about changing gears and getting something else. Thoughts? Opinions both negative and positive are encouraged. Plus, I ban myself for not posting this in the Bmw section.

Hmm.. I think after test driving the used e92 335 you'll quickly find the car feels older than your f30 in every way. The transmission will be a clear step backwards, not as smooth or quick shifting. The suspension won't feel as solid and might need to be replaced soon. And the engine definitely won't feel as smooth. Even comparing the N20 to the N54, with a simple tune on the N20 you'll be making the same power with similar torque but at a lower RPM. The n54 is a fantastic engine forsure, but imo not as refined as BMWs newer engines. Then you have the interior which very much looks dated compared to an f30. You'll see wear and tear and hear squeaks and creaks. Perhaps you can find one that's well kept and mint, (rare) but imo it'll still feel older.

My wife has a 2013 c250. It drives well and I would say is comparable to a 328. The sound system is better than the hk system. The interior is a nice layout, however I prefer the look of the idrive. It also has a spare tire and dipstick. Would I take a c250 over a 328...maybe.
Last year I had a e90 335i and now a 2013 335i. Even with the softer steering I find the f30 to be better in every way. You really can't compare a f30 335 to a c250 so I won't try to sway that any way. Would I take a f30 335 over a c250..absolutely. Another point..if you like modding or coding stick with a bmw. |

Dude I don't why there are so many horror stories... its always the same shit that goes bad...
watch for oil leaks watch for the waterpump / tstat dont' annhiliate the turbos and it will be fine Everything else - spark plugs, coils are normal maintanence items... if you get a 2009-2010, you should be fine. |

For some reason I cannot do multiple quotes so bare with me. Cliff notes on bottom.
Yeah, the e92 will feel dated compared to the F30 so that is something to consider but I feel like I'm getting 'bored' with it. If I do get a 335i I don't plan on doing anything crazy. Honestly, first mod would be a bike rack on the roof, however, most ppl on here see this as a negative with all the wind noise, fuel consumption going down, etc... We go biking on the weekends and wifey doesn't feel like throwing bike carriers on her CTS -_-. I would also do a muffler delete and just stay on top of maintenance. Maybe lower it but I'll keep the stock wheels as I've always loved the style 189 IIRC they are called on the 335i sport package. I wouldn't do anything engine/turbo wise for additional power as I've driven 335i's before during test drives and back in the day when BMW did the Susan Komen Breast Cancer drives and feel the power is adequate to my tastes. Now earlier this week I did test drive a 2011 N55 4dr with 44k miles but felt sluggish and CEL came on during the test drive. My 328 felt like a M3 compared to that 335i so I walked away from it. As for the Benz, the c250/c300 would be a step back performance wise but it just seems so classy and more luxurious compared to my f30. Yeah, I have the base f30 with only two options, moonroof and black sapphire metallic paint but those C classes just catch my eye. Now something came into my interest last night but can be a nightmare but worth a look. A 2007 CLK550 cabrio. I know, verts but it's a total sleeper and its at a Mercedes dealership about an hour north of me. Carfax shows extensive service records with 2 battery changes (only has 50k miles and it's been in service for 10 years now) but this could be a money pit. I have no knowledge about known issues with those so I would be walking in blind. However, after I get out of work today I plan on buying a code reader and just scan every car I look at tomorrow and go from there. Plus it would be nice to have a generic one to use on the CTS and for the F30 if I decide to keep it or any other car I get for reference. For those saying why not get a F30 335i is because that is too much coin for me now. Whichever car I get, I will have funds to set aside each month for maintenance, repairs when needed. Cliff Notes: 2008 335i won't be modded. 2012-2013 Benz C250/300 for the more luxurious feel 2007 CLK550 - am I nuts? |

My mechanical skills are limited to basic oil changes but I have local relatives who will change spark plugs, coils, brakes, coolant parts and such for me in exchange for alcohol. Plus, I know a local BMW mechanic with his own shop and is an enthusiast so I'm not too worried about that.

I've debated getting rid of the 1 series for a C250 myself. Test drove one and really liked the look and feel. It's not a road monster, but I could definitely see myself commuting in one on a regular basis.

For starters, here's a link to the 335i at CarMax and the 2007 CLK550 at a MB dealership. This other place has all the BMW's and Mercedes to go over so I'll be visiting all three places tomorrow morning and hope to decide after test driving a few of them. Keep in mind my limit is $19K out the door.
335i https://www.carmax.com/cars/bmw/335/2008/13050281 CLK550 http://www.mercedespalmbeach.com/use...9a589b3525.htm Benz's and BMW's http://dorallincoln.com/Miami/For-Sa...e=10&MakeId=30 The C classes have to be at least 2012 as I've noticed the 2011 and older have that cheap looking center dash that I don't care about. |
