Do you crate your dog?

My dog is unfortunately ending up being crated for several hours while I'm at work. This has become a recent issue with the fact that my ex is now working full time as well. I try to get home during lunch to let her out but sometimes I can't and she ends up in there for as much as 8 hours straight. If I let her have free reign of the house she will chew the crap out of anything she can get her teeth on. Anyone else crate their dog for extended periods? It can't be good for her.

My dog is crate trained and loves his crate. It's his "safe place". How long is your dog in the crate? One solution is checking out your HOA facebook page and seeing if there is a neighborhood kid who is being home schooled who will look in on your pet every day. We have one kid doing that for 6 or 7 homes around us, and including us.

I had the same problem when I had a 100 pound rotty mix living in upstate NY. I purchased a rather long leash, tied it to the back door near the kitchen where she could roam around the kitchen and not do any damage.

I removed the crate about 9 months ago. And now have a dog bed in its place. However my dog is not a chewer or destructive. What kind of dog do you have? Some are just prone to chewing. I do close all the doors to rooms and limit her access to just the living room. You could try that and then make sure there is nothing to chew on, or get something the dog can chew on bone/toy.

I'm assuming this is a puppy? Most adult dogs don't need to be in a crate all day.

Yeah, I crate my beagle, but walk her at lunch three days a week and she goes to a dog camp twice a week. She's happy in there.

Left out she'll scratch up doors. I don't actually lock the crate, but do put a kid gate up so she has access to her water and a few more square feet.

Get some anti-chew spray. Sour apple works well for big dogs. Once they get a taste of it when they try and chew something, they don't chew again. Broke 2 pit bulls of chewing in one day with it. Both my pits were crate trained. "Kennel Up" and they'd go right in their kennels. Try the spray and figure out a way to make the crate a place your dog wants to be. Bed, maybe a chew toy.

I made sure as soon as I got home from work, they were out of the crate and running in the fields behind my house to get the sillies out.

I have a 5 year old German shorthair pointer and we do not crate him. With us gone to work and school, he normally has the house to himself for 6-8 hours. We make sure to let him out before the last person leaves and the first person home takes him out.

This. Ours has the run of the house. He's a family member.

We have a 15 month old pitbull and she's crate trained; however, she's never in there for extended periods of time. She loves her crate and even self crates at times. My wife and I work full time so we send her to daycare or have the sitter over for multiple walks a day. It gets pricey but it's worth it to us as we have zero appetite for leaving her in the crate all day.

We did way back when ours was a pup, but she hasn't had to be in a crate in over 10 years. We still have a crate and she absolutely loves it (to the point she whines to go in it if she sees it out). When any of our friends dogsit her when we are out of town, we give them the crate so they can use it if they so choose. She's good easily 6+ hrs if need be, but our dogsitters rarely ever shut the thing.

I recommend trying to correct the behavior that drives the necessity to crate, or adjust your house set up to allow her some freedom of movement while you are gone. I'd feel really bad if we absolutely had to crate our dog every time we leave the house, til the day she's no longer with us.

I have two dogs, a 6y/o lab, and a 6mo puppy. The puppy is crated because she's still about 80% bathroom trained. I'd often come home mid-day to let her out, but rarely 8 hrs a day. If it must be 8 hrs, i make sure she got her walk in, ate, and pooped, prior crating.

Other than that, she's pretty good. I leave the crate open during bed time and it's her safe place.

The lab roams free around the house except in our bedroom.

We always use a crate. Its better for everyone, if nothing else other than peace of mind. If we leave for a while and don't close them in, nearly 100% of the time they are still laying in there when we get back. It's their safe place.

No, but i wish i did yesterday. He's 5 and has gone 4 years without issue and yesterday he pulls down all the stockings, which knocked over table decorations and stole a towel from the kitchen (originally purchased from a trip to Denmark) and proceeded to tear it up and eat half of it.

He got some gangster ass silent treatment for about an hour. That'll teach him! lol

I don't see why I need to lock up a dog when with proper training, they should be able to roam around at home freely without any harm to self or its environment.

Fortunately, my dog is very docile and doesn't do any kind of damage. I just lay out a pee pad for her to use when I'm gone for extended period of time (she usually just holds until I come home but I also come back for lunch everyday).

I had the same problem when I left mine crated up for 8 to 10 hours while I was at work. I noticed she became highly irritable as each day passed, would bark and snarl at me for no real reason (probably felt neglected). I tried to get her toys, but she would just destroy my things instead. Once I started putting her in the cage and only letting her out to cook and clean, I could tell there were some serious deep rooted issues going on (ie biting and destroying the furniture) so in the end I decided to just rehome her.

But on the plus side, I did get to keep the dog.

how old is your dog? Does she have chew toys? Different dogs take to crating differently. One of my dogs was no problem, the other hated the crate.

My little guy (he is now six) spent his first 2 years in a crate when my wife and I were at work. Eventually we started to trust him to just the first floor of the house, and once he was about 3, he had full reign of the house when we were out. He has been great, and i've actually caught him a couple times just running up and sleeping in our bed when we are out (he is a 13lb little guy so we dont mind).

Like some others have mentioned here, my wife and I work most of the day, so I just couldn't leave him crated that long and expect him not to get depressed or anxious.
