Cool 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet a "Flagship Land Yacht!"

That'll Work...!

Quote:
Starting up top – literally – this big-boned beauty features a three-layer fabric roof to keep that old harpy mother nature at bay. It can be operated at speeds up to 37 miles an hour, taking just 20 seconds to fold away or redeploy.

Putting the roof down reveals what the company describes as a “yacht-like atmosphere,” which makes sense because the S-Class sedan on which this cabriolet is based has arguably the nicest interior in its segment. Top-shelf materials abound, as does tasteful design and tons of technology.

Keeping occupants comfy-cozy is a groundbreaking climate-control system. It’s fully computer networked and sports 12 sensors as well as 18 separate actuators. The car’s AIRCAP wind deflectors reduce turbulence and noise while the AIRSCARF system provides neck-level heating for maximum comfort. Beyond all of this, there are heated seats and optional heated armrests. Hell, you could probably drive one of these cars through a blizzard with the top down and still sweat your ass off.

S550 Cabriolet models sport a 4.6-liter V8 engine that churns out 449 horsepower along with 516 lb-ft of torque. They’re matched to a nine-speed automatic transmission for maximum driving pleasure and fuel efficiency.

Beyond this, the company will also offer a Mercedes-AMG version of this beast, the S63 4Matic Cabriolet. It features a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with 577 horses and 664 lb-ft of torque. This variant can hit 60 miles an hour in just 3.9 seconds.

Despite losing its roof, the S-Class cabriolet’s body is supposedly just as torsionally rigid as the Coupe model on which it’s based. Despite sharing numerous components, a few special parts help up the stiffness of the droptop version.

As for all-important pricing and availability information, I can’t tell you when the new S-Class Cabriolet will go on sale nor what it will cost but later and A LOT are probably safe guesses.

Pricing is yet to be announced...

I don't get why they can't just do a hard-top. It's got enough power so you know weight isn't an issue.

Even Miatas have retractable hard-tops!

I'm sorry but this just looks retarded:

I mean, you got the beautiful muscular lines of the body, then you got the POS soft top on top. No bueno.

Well to be fair... Even BENTLEY also uses a Soft-Top. I'm pretty sure are both crafted very well and you wouldn't even notice while driving.

The shadows on the leather make it look dirty :|

Other than that, it's cool and all but I would spend my money on something else.

All top level luxury convertibles use soft-tops. It may actually be perceived by the intended customers as being more luxurious, or more classic. Look at this Mercedes S, Bentley, or Rolls, or at a lower (but still quite high) level BMW 6. All their convertibles are soft tops.

Cloth tops are nicer, look better and take up less trunk space when folded. Hardtops look like awkward coupes. Do you really think folks buying an S Cab can't also buy a coupe of some sort?

Rumor has it that the G series 4er will go back to a softtop.

I like it, I like the soft top, there is no way to make the car look like this and have a folding hard top

A well engineered fabric over hard all day any day.
I'm guessing this car has lower dB levels, top up, inside than any hard top convertible on the market.

650s spider may be quite...just not at wot of course.

Two seat hard tops can look okay, 458, 650S, even the Miata PRHT, but no four seat folding hardtop has ever looked good.

Folding hard tops take up a lot of space, I would bet that's the main (or only) reason. S-class needs a useable trunk, but I suppose this is a niche-model that doesn't make much sense anyway...

Another big reason manufacturers go for soft top is so there is a noticeable difference between the coupe and convertible. They don't want a convertible that sort of almost looks like a coupe, they want the convertible to clearly look like a convertible.

C'mon... if you are in the market for a big luxury vert what else even sniffs the ground this walks on (besides Rolls/Bentley)? I think its beautiful.
