Am I the only one shocked that a Renault hatch down 100 plus HP did the same lap time as the M3?

Meh, 300kg lighter (660 lbs! Or 1/5 the car....) and built purely for the track.

It should be quick as hell.

Love how the M3 is one of the cheaper cars and he puts it in his list. Damn I want this car so much.

The Renault showcased here would be the equivalent of an M3 GTS with slick tires, track tuned suspension and gutted interior.

Plus, the M3 in it's factory stock form is less of a dedicated track car than the Renault. The M3 is track ready, but not track tuned. This generation around, it's more of a 400 lb-ft, rear tire smokin', not-many-f*%#s-given, German Muscle Salooooon! Germ-MURICA! F*%$ YEAH!

Worthy of noting. On describing the orgasmic F12, Chris Harris says: "It's just the most extreme, extraordinary motor vehicle. I come back to this analogy, it's just a great, big, M3! Its got the dynamics. The front engine the rear wheel drive. The 740 horsepower!"

Having a $330,000 Ferrari F12 measured against your M car ... priceless.

Tyres, suspension and setup make this a fast car. Holds the Nordschleife record for a FWD car at 07:54.

M3 could be faster given its power:weight, but I think it's in the street setup rather than tyres.

No doubt this is a great review, and it means more coming from Harris. I've said this before but Ill repeat myself, my two favorite car reviewers before I even thought about getting this car were Harris and Farah. Both of them love it and that does make me feel good about the purchase. In fairness, my third favorite Steve Sutcliffe did not like it, and the Evo guys (who I respect a lot) didn't either. Its not for everyone, but its definitely the right car for me.

Yeah, I know what it is. I subscribe to both Evo and Car. That still doesn't explain everything.

Exactly.

I know Chris Harris loves the car, but his quotes really reflect that he embraces what the M3 is, whereas other journos are disappointed by it, expecting something different. Let's face it, even Chris mentions that the car oversteers "probably too much for it's own good" in the video. BMW set this car up to be loose in the rear, and very slidey. Very old school AMG, as Chris says. Even though the Renault is basically a touring car in with street legal tires, the BMW should have nipped it by a few seconds more.

This car, as noted by many, has a traction issue at 10/10ths. Not at 9ths, but when you're ultimately looking for the grip to really pile on speed, this car gives up the ghost and slides. I've long believed that BMW set it up that way on purpose, and I haven't seen anything to counter that yet.

Note: I also don't think this is a bad thing. For normal drivers, using this car how it's intended, it's fine.

I will take solace from the fact that the Speciale beat the GT3 by no less than FIVE seconds. That is absolutely remarkable in a 2 minute lap.

all in the tires. would love to see that same lap done in M3 with no changes except 275/295 width MPSC2's. on a course like that could be several seconds since the M3 is always got way more power going to the tires than they can handle and translate into usable force versus going up in smoke.

Doesn't surprise me in the least the way they were blowing my doors off at Spa and Nurburgring.
