And actually the herd at Point Reyes are Colombian black-tailed deer (or also known as mule deer). I only know this because I overheard a ranger giving a presentation. They had a huge controversy a while back about removing non-native species from the park. |

Thanks Mark.
Ed, are the mule deer not native? I'm sure that the coyote are.

Superb owl portrait, DC. Is that a big crop or were you allowed a private audience?

Private audience. Without portrait orientation, it wouldn't fit in the viewfinder. It also helped that I had the 500mm, plus the 1.4x TC-III on a 1.6x crop body. Dave

Very cool. I'd love to be allowed to get so close. I hear owls often around my house, but rarely see one except from a good distance.

During the day, look in the same areas. They are very hard to see, but they'll tend to stay put, thinking they're invisible. If they do fly, it's usually only 100-yards, or less, so you can re approach. Shooting with the 7D2, 400mm gets you close enough for only a moderate crop. They DO require an investment of time to find, but the one I posted above was just luck. I was looking for deer and I saw him fly up from the ground. Dave

Judith and I are just back from a few days in southern Portugal and thought you might like to see this one of Palacio da Pena, high above Sintra, about 25km from Lisbon.

Beautiful deer shot, DC. Doesn't get much sharper than that.
