The more reps you collect, the more it goes to the right and turns red. They're trying to tell the popular kids they're cool while making others blue.

If it's around the middle, your rep score is around the average, if it's more to the right of middle your score is above average and more to the left you are below average.

I'm working on my reading skills, I missed the app word!

You need to add some colors and then we can do a rerun to this!

I tried saying sorry, my bad but I'm allergic to those words.

Smile The Bar is Showing Standard Deviations

OP, The bar is showing actual standard deviations (SD). Light Blue if you are <1 SD, Dark Blue if you are <2 (SD), Red if you are <3 (SD). Obviously if the bar is full with all three colors than you get the >3 standard deviations note.

In statistics, the standard deviation (SD, also represented by the Greek letter sigma σ or the Latin letter s) is a measure that is used to quantify the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of data values.

Think of a bell curve used on a chart to represent data, the target is the peak of the bell. In some cases, like a high volume production line, you want to hit the peak or target every time. Anything higher or lower means a defect in your product. "All variance is evil". Companies would react to the quality indicator and take action to get back on target by changing out wearable items in the production line equipment, or change a tool, process, etc. So, if your production line of animal crackers is running on a six sigma level (meaning you can go -3/+3 (SD) from target, you would have some absurdly low error rate for every 1 million crackers made.

In Bimmerpost's usage they are taking the whole population's average and setting the peak at the start of the curve to score how many standard deviations away in a positive direction from the average you are. (using a half bell curve, since you can't go negative with rep points).

It would be interesting to see the shape of the Bimmerpost bell, which I presume changes with membership numbers, and I would imagine changes the area value (or percentage) of an actual standard deviation. I think....

Here is an example of a bell curve used with standard deviations, to give you an idea of what I am on about. I hope it helped you along with what others are saying.

I am inclined to think it is even more complicated in this case. You yourself have a rating that is more than 1 standard deviation, which according to the Bimmerpost formula is in the top 15% of the population. Since Reputation points are measured in a positive direction only (no negative Rep points), the software ignores the possibility of a negative score, yet tells you where you lie in a standard deviation on a bell curve that includes the possibility of a negative score.

I am sure one of the moderators can better explain the whole thing and in simpler terms.

Thanks for explaining it. It is a little more complicated only because we have a bimodal distribution of the population (alot of post whores and alot of people with 0-10 reputation) so we have a very large SD.

The other thing is you assume that a bell curve or any population distribution needs negative numbers and so a half bell is used? You don't need negative values to create a population curve. We simply do not display the negative SDs to people since it would not be as informative due to our non standard population distribution.

In the end its almost to the T how you explained it in the first post except we have some tweaks to account for our population distribution and we also take into account relative activity (surfing, etc..)

@Mark Thanks for stepping in and clarifying. I personally would love to see the shape of the curve. Can it be posted? Again thanks for all you and others like you do for the forum. I appreciate the work all of you put into it.
