^^ This. BMW would need to shave 1000 pounds off the 6er/7er chassis to begin competing with the 911, and that's just not in their DNA anymore.

Never. Ever. Has an offical BMW release claim they would make a 911 competitor. ONLY misguided forum members say this. BMW DID say that "they are NOT a sportscar company "

Wow so in the same vein as the 316i is a speedboat with a canal barge engine the 8 series is a cruise liner with a jet engine.

Cannot disagree with this. However I think they are missing a trick. The upper echelon sports car and super car market has never been so lucrative.

That's because a 911 is built as a sports car from the group up - from a base car to the GT3-RS. They are true sports cars.

The M4 GTS on the other hand....well, began life as a 4 series - which is a very nice and sporty luxury car. But isn't a sports car.

I think BMW could make a competitor of the 911/R8, etc. with the i8, if they wanted to do so. All the hypercars have moved to a hybrid type of setup, and the combination will keep trickling down. But maximizing that tech in a halo car? Just doesn't seem like BMW is interested...

That was all over instagram this morning!

I'm excited. Love the lines and proportion so far. With the kill on the 6 complete this slots in the 8 nicely.

Nice deep sounding exhaust note in this latest clip

Back end steps out in the wet a little early on in the Ring vid too.

New BMW 8-Series Convertible Comes Out Of Hiding

Quote:
BMW has a lot of new cars in development, and one of them is the open-top version of the upcoming 8-Series.

Built on the same architecture as its fixed-roof sibling, which is shared with the 5- and 7-Series as well, it will serve as the more upscale replacement of the current 6-Series Convertible.

The latest prototype scooped at the Nurburgring has most of its body hidden away beneath vinyl wraps. However, we do know that it will adopt many of the design features of the 8-Series Concept that was shown in late spring during the Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este and, as is obvious from the images, a soft top instead of a retractable hard top.

As far as the engine lineup goes, expect an assortment of six- and eight-cylinder units, and even a possible V12, which will power the 825, 830, 835, 850, 845, 860 and M850, as these are the monikers trademarked by BMW last year.

Coming to top them all could be an M model, just like the Coupe, probably using the V8 powertrain of the new M5 that's expected to develop around 600hp, which will place it against the likes of the Mercedes-AMG S63 Cabriolet.

Doesn't look promising to me, I wish it will look more like the 8 concept.
Hope BMW make this to be something like an Aston Martin or Maserati GT
