This man speaketh the truth.

If you're buying a car, get a Lexus GS.

If you're leasing and turning it in, an Audi is a sexy proposition.

Everytime I get onto the Forums and see a Lexus thread I get so amazed...because down here you can't give them away. They're assumed to be overpriced Corollas, and the dealerships are always next to a Toyota one. In the US they sell so well, though. Makes me wonder if the marketing strategy is just wrong then? A mate brought an ISF and he kept getting roasted, because most Uber cars here are Corollas. One day he drove up to a BBQ and someone asked, "hey, didn't know Uber drivers join in on the meal?" Last time we saw that car-enter the M3.

Sounds like South Africans don't like Toyotas or anything related to them.

Yep some Lexi such as the ES are warmed over Toyotas but there are several Lexus lines that are unique to the brand -- in the US at any rate. IS, GS and LS are all unique to Lexus. The fact that they share some components with Toyota is seen in the US as a testimonial to their probable reliability, and in fact Lexus is the most reliable brand in several consumer surveys. Luxury + reliability sells here.

Toyotas sell the most here-only VW outsells them. They've been in the country for years and are loved by all. Their vans/trucks as called over there are by far the most selling. The problem is just Lexus. Seems to be a symbol to buy German, the belief is by buying a Lexus, you in an overpriced Corolla. I've seen what an ISF can do, and it's got some nice bits-but it's just nowhere close to my M.

Amusing how many wouldn't touch a Golf but would buy an Audi, wouldn't touch aN Audi but drive a Porsche. All boils down to preference, me thinks. Would you choose a Lexus over a German Marque for exact same price?

The GS350 is a solid vehicle. Well built, beautifully appointed interior, surprisingly amazing driving dynamics for a vehicle of its size, and reliability that will stand the test of time. Only downside is the NAV/UI but that has been improved on the 2016+ models. I used to own an IS350 with the same 2GR-FSE engine in the GS; clocked almost 140K miles on that car with 0 issues in my ownership experience.

For the exact same price I would definitely choose the Lexus if I was planning on keeping the car for 10 years. If not, leasing a German marque makes much more sense to me.

Re-badged Toyota. Great if you plan on keeping it because Toyota's just run and never die.

Re-badged from what?

Those days rebadged Toyota's handle better and have better steering feel than BMW's, while maintaining better reliability, price and resale value. So what's your point?

I disagree. I think the current LCI significantly improved gripes with the F30's suspension and steering feel.

BMWs used to be MILES better in road feel and handling but that gap has narrowed significantly while remaining quite a ways back in terms of reliability and longevity. I don't think a Lexus would have left me stranded on the side of the road on my birthday or required more than a dozen trips to the dealer in 36 months (28k miles). Reliability goes a long way for a lot of people.

You also dodged the question regarding the re-badging.

It's possible, but I haven't seen any major US magazine comparisons for LCI yet. What I know is that BMW is not the same what it used to be, "ultimate driving machine" is gone. It become more of the diluted main stream luxury brand with cheap leases and FWD models, so almost anybody who is on the market for Honda Accord EX-L can afford. So to me it's not surprising that "re-badged" Toyota's can out-handle BMW's bread-and-butter or that Camaro's can match M-devision performance... sadly but true

As others have asked, rebadged from what? GS and LS are RWD platforms with AWD optional. These aren't Camrys with ventilated seats (that would be the ES).

Also FWIW I bought CPO and intend to sell it on when the next shiny bauble catches my eye.

Current bodystyle is a pretty nice car. Not as good as the Germans when it comes to the details, but still a nice reliable car that isn't boring either.

There used to be such a huge gap between the way BMWs drove and the way their competition did. During those good days, it was a no brainer for enthusiasts to tolerate BMW's questionable reliability and high maintenance costs because the driving dynamics were so sublime. Nowadays, drive almost any non-M BMW side-by-side with its competitors and they all feel nearly the same. Others have caught up or even surpassed BMW in the interior department, and some others are more reliable too. The incentive to choose a BMW over the competition has greatly diminished in my opinion.

You don't want your back seat passengers to be very happy I guess. My whole purpose for getting a car like the GS was to carry 4 people in comfort.

I looked at one, it was also an F Sport. The rear seemed VERY cramped and the rear boot space was some of the smallest I've ever seen. For someone with a kid, I couldn't see me making it happen.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I like the IS looks and driving experience better but the back seat just doesn't cut it.
