Buy new laptop or upgrade current one?

I currently have an ASUS U56e. Would I be better off upgrading the ram and hdd in it or buying a new rMBP 13 with 8gb ram/256PCIe flash drive?

What are the specs on your current comp? That would help when it comes to making the decision to upgrade. Also, what do you plan on using it for? And do you have a tablet?

2.3 GHz Core i5-2410M
8gb Ram
750gb HDD

It's a pretty decent set-up. If I could figure out how to install OSX on it I probably wouldn't even consider making the transition at the moment. I've tried mounting the .DMG on a bootable USB/CD and I never get past the loading screen.

Just going by the hardware profile of your comp and the fact that you want OSX, I would personally upgrade. Definitely a solid system in its day though.

You're running a Sandy Bridge Core i5 which is a great processor, but it's getting long in the tooth. 5th gen Core is already out (albeit Core M, not Core I). You will see a significant increase in battery life and performance with a more recent Haswell (4th gen) or Broadwell (5th gen) system. Couple that with a SSD and it will be night and day between your old system and a new one.

Beyond that, you are going to get a significantly better screen in any modern day system (especially if you got a rMBP).

Cheapest, most bang for your buck is to just upgrade your HDD to a SSD. Your user experience will improve significantly due to the SSD, but your battery life won't really improve that significantly. If you aren't super mobile with it, then that might not matter. But if you travel/rely on battery a lot, you might want to think about a system with either 4th or 5th gen Core i5 (Mac or otherwise).

Completely agreed. It's not completely unlike getting a new laptop.

Also, unless you're a neat freak and always on top of what's running on your system to keep it lean and mean, it might be a good time to reinstall Windows as well, unless it'll take you a few days to reload all your programs (which is the case buying a new one anyhow).

256GB isn't that big. But I would upgrade simply to get a new laptop to fiddle around with.

My next upgrade would probably be Surface Pro. Not long ago I bought HP 2570p cheap and pretty happy with it, small solid laptop with upgradable CPU to quad core.

My only beef with the Surface, in general, is the lack of internal WWAN capability. IMHO if you're going to advertise it as a tablet of any kind, it requires internal WWAN capabilities. PERIOD.

Yes I have, on several occasions, bitched out the MS Consultants on conference calls about this shit.

What do you use this computer for? Email, surfing and web? If so upgrade.

If you do any heavy picture of video editing, maybe gaming then get something new.
