People are willing to pay for it. And those that don't get it have a less expensive car. I don't really see the issue. BMW has always been about choice. You have to pay to get what you want.
That's what you think. In 2004 Bi-Xenon headlights were a $700 dollar option on sedans and standard on all coupes. Today, 10 years or a decade later, the same system is in place. Xenons are $500 option or more (mini's). The cost of manufacturing these lights is dirt cheap by now, to the point that they are on Kia's and toyotas that are priced around 17k.

So a $30,000 BMW base model doesn't have xenons but a 17k Kia does... Your right, people are willing to pay for the xenons, but don't believe for a second the cars are "cheaper" in standard from because they aren't on the car. There is just more mark up. They are ripping us off and they should be included.

Part of the reason I know this current generation of 3 series is really a half ass attempt of a car they could produce. BMW chose not to push and advance the bar. They could have added really great quality and standard kit, then charged more for all the new technologies like LED lights as an option. Instead they went the easy and highly profitable route knowing they would still sell because it's a BMW. I hate when car companies don't try. And you can tell. Mercedes with the new S and even C class, they are trying to move the bar. Tesla, they are trying to move the bar. Even Chrysler group seems to be trying to move the bar. Kia is another that comes to mind. Unfortunately BMW went through a dry spell. It seams they might be trying again but it's hard to say. The new G11 7 series hopefully should be the start of a next gen of really great BMW's.

End rant.

LOVE the i8 interior LED's. Can't believe we've never seen that before, or at least I haven't. My favorite interior of any BMW, reminds me of TRON... which is awesome!

What flexibility?

You can NOT get LED Taillights on the 3/4 series. Period.

Doesn't mater how much money you throw at BMW, you will only get Halogens, how is this flexible?

Even every cheapo Polo has LED Tails now

It's called profit margin.

Use cheaper halogen taillights for launch production. Introduce more expensive LED during the LCI refresh.

blinding the person in behind you != increased safety. i absolutely don't like it, especially on recent camrys. same goes for the recent incredibly bright police emergency lights.

Good to see that Thomas Edison is with BMW's premium brand marketing philosophy.

The press release said "we'll make laser light so cheap that only the rich will buy halogen bulbs"

Fully agree. BMW has really fallen behind on the basics on this front. LED technology has been in the center mounted brake light since the 80s. Other than for that purpose BMW has been spotty at best. Here is my experience but you can look at many other BMW models and see similar lack of use of even LED technology. Keep in mind that many of the most basic low price models from Detroit, Japan, and Korea have led brake, tail, and turn indicator lights.

1993 318 didn't expect it
2000 323ci didn't expect it
2001 330i I hoped for it but it never showed up except in the ci
2006 330i expected it. It showed up in the lci and then was taken off on the f series. Crazy...
2013 135is expected it.
2014 x1 expected it.

I have installed LEDs in my 135 and e90 330 with aftermarket bulbs. Bottom line is cool stuff but unless they change their strategy and timeline for rollout, history would suggest that we might see this on a model that I might purchase in about 10 years.
