Yes, and no.

Some of the earlier "adventures" had accidents that certainly felt unscripted; the later episodes (last few seasons) were more apparently scripted as an attempt to recreate the magic from the earlier ones.

Let's put it this way, obviously there was a scripted element to the last TG, but it was MUCH, MUCH more clear this time.

I refuse to watch the new Top Gear on BBC. I'm waiting the return of the true team on Amazon. End of line.

Yeah true, I figure I'll give it time. There's a learning curve to this sort of thing. I did read that The Grand Tour will focus more on road trips and challenges rather than individual car reviews which was my favorite part of TG. TG will continue to have those, even though I feel like they won't come close to the original crew in their witty car reviews that even non-car people can understand and like, but still.

I feel like those who are hating would've blindly disliked the show regardless of what they did. Even if they were able to create an exact carbon copy of the original, they'd complain that they're just doing the same old shit and not trying anything new.

as with anything, when things change people think the previous version was so much better, When Top Gear existed before Clarkson-Hammond-May, people thought the 3 new guys were idiots also. The show is what it is, I'm sure it will get better

Hate to break it to you, but Clarkson was with top gear since the 80s. Clarkson was always (IMO) the magical component.

Though, I think Matt actually came close. Rory reminded me of a young Hammond (in spirit) and Harris as the ever technically minded May (added benefit of being an incredible driver).

Those three are all TG:UK needs. Well, them, time, and a looser leash.

To me, that's the point. They're trying to recreate the magic of the old, "Gen 2" TG. When Gen 2 took over from Gen 1, the show changed; here, they are trying to keep the same formula. So of course, people will make direct comparisons. And you're right, in many ways, it's unfair to compare a show that was on for 22 series with the same presenters (save for Series 1) - they became a well-oiled machine. BUT, that's what they did by trying to keep it the same.

IMO, they should have looked to have done something completely different - then, people would have looked at it as a new show and compared it to itself, rather than to its predecessor.

I honestly tried watching it with an open mind, but the fact that it looked and felt like the old TG only served as a reminder that it was not the old TG.

Matt LeBlanc is pretty good at times, very comfortable in front of a camera and funny. Everyone else pretty much stinks, Someone should tell Evans the show is Top Gear, not Top Of Your Lungs. Poor Sabine looks like a deer in the headlights. The Extra Gear thing looked like a high school project with a zombie audience. The fact that they only dared to tweak the old format in rather meaningless ways showed how desperate they are. There is no creative energy and not much chemistry going on so I doubt I'll waste more time watching this car wreck.

I'll stick to the reruns of the old show. If I want to see Joey, I'll watch Friends on Netflix.

I think they have Chris Harris in the wings in case Chris Evans tanks. I think we all know the answer to that.

TBH: If you have watched TG for a really long time, the first few seasons of Clarkson, Hammond and Mays weren't good at all. None of them are car guys, they're all journalists. It takes time to build chemistry, but I don't think Evans will ever get there.

Replace Evans with Harris and keep Matt LeBlanc and I think it'd be much better.

I thought Matt LeBlanc was a great presenter, especially considering the lackluster "challenge." TG cinematography is clean and crisp as always, but the format just sucked so badly.

The Extra Gear session, as half-decent as it was, was rushed and awkward. Chris Harris' mega potential didn't come through at all. I'll stop now...

It was terrible. As bad as - if not worse than - Top Gear USA, imo. And that's a new low.

For me it's the lack of humor and the lack of content. I want to see some humor, sarcasm, hyperbole, that's what I've come to expect from Top Gear. It doesn't have to be from Jeremy-Clarkson-May but it has to be good.

If there's no humor that's fine, but please make up for it with really good quality content about cars. This show seems to have neither. It's just some guy yelling. And why does he keep yelling? That's so annoying.

I'm so disappointed, it's not even as good as Fifth Gear.

I read the description for what was on EP2 and didn't even bother watching.

Problem is that the content sounds exactly the same as what the old Top Gear would have been (which I personally thought was getting stale for a couple of years anyway).

I don't find neither of the main presenters funny, nor do they seem like genuine car guys. Then you pile on same old content as before and I'm out.

Honestly, I'd rather Chris Harris didn't take the job (although I don't blame him) so that I can still watch his videos on YT. I thought they are far more worthwhile than wasting me time watching TG.

Ep2 was much better than the first one. Not a fan of Evans, it's like he is trying to hard to be Clarkson. Matt was decent. There are so many better presenters on youtube that it baffles me that they picked Evans.

2nd one was better. Evans still can't stop yelling. I'm not sure if he knows how to present without yelling. Eddie Jordan as pretty boring too.

Top Gear USA 'Postal', which I also watched last night, was much funnier to me.
