Trade BMW for Evo 8?
So here is the question.
Loan of 27k on a 2012 135i fully loaded with 77k miles and warranty until 80k miles. Posted it for sale at $25k but received an offer yesterday for an Evo 8 2003 fully built with 80k miles on it + he will add $7000 cash. I know nothing about Evo's and have had BMW for my last 3 or 4 cars. I use the 135i as my DD and travel 35 miles round trip per day by highway. My intentions here are to get out from upside down on the car and/or trade in with some equity in about a year or 2 for an M3 or if my financial situation improves I am on the list for an M2 (just in case). Opinions on this type of transaction and suggestions / comments please? |

Modded cars are cool cause there modded. Modded cars also can be ticking time bombs. Every single time I considered trading my car for another was because of a problem.

Both cars look clean, but buying a car that is already built has risks. Majority of the time you do not know who built the car, how well it was built, how well it was maintained, or how the owner drove it. You don't build a fast car to drive slow...

I've owned an Evo 8 and Evo 10.
The Evo is a fast car... but the one you want to get is a 2005 and newer one. In straight line performance, you won't notice a difference but there is a huge difference in handling. In 2005, they added a front helical LSD and upgraded the center differential to the ACD unit. The 2003 and 2004 models have a open front differential and a viscous center differential. The only Evo 8 with these upgrades is the 2005 Evo 8. Evo 9 had these features as standard and the Evo 10's handling is superior because of the S-AYC system with torque vectoring.

NO WAY.
You are buying someone else's build issues and problems. That car also looks pretty blingtastic, if i'm honest....is that really your style? |

Evo 8 doesn't have the updated interior and recaros
The 4G63 didn't come with mivec until 2006 and evo 9 designation. Tial 50mm BOV on a MAF car is a big no no Not worth it IMHO |

You owe 27k on a nearly four year old 1 series with 77k miles?
Egads, I'd take any deal that would get you out of that hole. |

A 12 year old, highly modified car is a timebomb of huge, expensive repairs.
Where will you be if the tune is half assed (and the shocker sticker tells me that may be the case) and the motor goes into meltdown. Bet there are not many shops that would even be willing to work on it, and those that do, will charge you out the ass. How much to replace a motor? If you truly want to get out of your hole, dump the 1er quick and buy a stock Civic or something. |

I will add that that particular Evo is super ugly and modded cars are a big no-no. That alone deters me unless he can return it to stock.
If you're upside down in the loan, the only way out is to pay it down until you're not upside down.

As states before I was planning on paying the loan down in the next 5 months from upside down. I was going to put $800 month for the next 4 months will get the car into positive equity for a private sale and continuing this for 10 months should about break even at a dealership.

You don't want that evo. Heavily modded cars are almost never a good deal unless you can pick them up for pennies. Too much of a gamble unless you trust the work was done properly, and you know the car has been given adequate maintenance.
Not to mention, this particular car has some absolutely tasteless wheels and an equally crappy hood. |

As a purely financial advice - no deal!
Get ext wrty for another year or two and continue to make large pmts to increase equity. The wty will protect you from expensive repairs. Sell your car before 90K mi if possible. Also, the market for that Evo is microscopic. It will be much easier to sell your car as it is more appealing to a larger group of potential customers. If that Evo is just a toy (3rd or 4th car) then it wouldn't matter. GL |

I'd pass. Evo looks like it was owned by a Yobbo.

Put the buuying a modded car aside for a second.
What do you want from a car? Why are you considering trading? What is your main driver for selling the BMW? You say your BMW is a daily driver - how many Kms do you a day/week? The BMW will be much more comfortable to commute in, and will get better fuel econonmy compared to the Evo (since its likely got a whopping great turbo and larger injectors). Elegant white BMW Vs outlandish yellow rice rocket - both have their style...but its personal preference,...a decision that only you can make. Steve |
