New 991 GT3 RS - Engine change after 300 miles. Second engine goes up in flames...

Apparently this 991 GT3 RS had a engine change after 480km (300 miles) and the second engine ended with "a bbq"...

991 GT3 RS well done.

first engine change at 480km
spare engine after 1600 km GT3 -->BBQ
Is it the 991 GT3 engine problems all over again or just one unlucky owner???

The two other fire damaged GT3 RS'...

With the amount of fanboying over Porsche quality on here, they sure have had a lot of blown motors.

All the more reason why the 996 and 997 gt3 variants are still appreciating...

Not that it matters, but you'll see both of those cars were at the track. And the first one, had a replacment motor within 300 miles, then immediately went to the track with the new motor? Ehhh. Not bright.

RS or not, I'd wait 1,000 miles before tracking my car.

HOWEVER. I'm clearly not saying it's ok for Porsche engines to just explode in flames. That clearly should not happen. I'm just crying a bit on the inside that they're on fire

If I spent that much money on a car and the motor just spontaneously combusts, I would be pissed.

i heard porsche has suspended GT3 RS production. Rumor mill is they are addressing said engine failures.

A few people on Rennlist with allocations/build dates had them pushed back or reverted back to 'pending'.

I am confident that Porsche will iron this out.

I had a friend just have his replacement engine blow up as well.... I'm not sure on the miles but I think over 10k. He too tracks the car occasionally.

I'm beginning to lean towards the camp which believes superior German engineering is a myth.

Porsche has been trying real hard to keep the rear engine concept relevant. Even porsche gave up on the idea for their hypercars, where previously cars like the 959 were still rear engine layouts. Cramming upwards of 500hp in that tiny space behind the rear axle has it's limits and I don't think they'll be able to compete indefinitely with that limitation, although hybrid setups are going to help them balance the weight back out a bit (but not so much the moment of inertia).

That was the first thing I thought when I saw the pics. Owners must have signed on the dotted line and left the dealership on their way to the track. That's nuts...

Yeah I still don't understand their obsession with that chunk behind the axle. Most buyers of the carrera are people who dont' give two hoots about where the engine sits anyways. If they just maintain the profile and slink the engine under the rear seats (or ditch those completely), they won't kill sales much.

Sadly porsche is still holding back the cayman with inferior strut rear suspension/detuned engines even in the gt4.
