Oh, that's just BMW's way of inviting you for a return visit to your dealership whereupon you can drive a much smaller loaner car for 2 weeks while they diagnose the problem. Or, if you live in a no-lemon law state, you can simply return it.

Was it particularly hot out when this happened? I had this happen once after sitting in a tunnel on a 110 degree day (car said it was 132 in the tunnel). After the car was shut off and cooled down the error went away and I haven't seen it since. My guess is that the threshold for a temp sensor is set low and was triggered by the hot heat.
