320d

A 320d would be nice for the US too. I am testing one at the moment and it is really strong. Has so much torque and is extremely efficient.

BMW needs to bring over one of their 4 cylinder diesels, like the 320d, to the US. I've driven the 335d a couple of times and was blown away by how powerful it is but also disappointed by its gas mileage which was not much more than the gas powered BMWs we own. A smaller engine would make a lot more sense if you ask me, something that's slower than a 328i but which gets over 40mpg combined would make sense to a lot of other people, too.

I think the sales of the 335d and X5 35d prove that people would be more interested in a smaller, more efficient diesel in the 3 series when only 10% of 3 series sold in the US were diesels while 50% of X5s sold in the same time period were diesel, the heavy X5 needs the strong motor but even in that application, the 35d only gets 3 more miles per gallon than the 35i.

+1

The only diesel manual I can think of is a jetta. Would be great to have this option and would instantly trade in my e91 for this

This. Bring 335d with n57.
300hp , monster torque and great fuel economy.

Good sign - I love my diesel so far.

The US needs to clean up their diesel pumps. I have to wear gloves each time I fuel up the X5 35d. That is the only thing that doesn't jive well with a luxury cruiser like this in my opinion.

The 3L diesel is perfect for the big 7. Would be good to see the 40d config, and an M version of the tri-turbo diesel.

Apparently BMW, Audi and Mercedes are all pretty stupid, then.

Wait, Mercedes has it figured out. Charge $92k (base) for the 6 cylinder diesel S class. http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/vehicl...model-S350BTC4

Yup. Bad idea.

it better be the uprated 40d guise, not the same 35d guise that we had on the e90.
That's good. That means we should expect a diesel 5 series soon (E350 Bluetec, A6 TDi on the way) and a 4 cylinder diesel 3 series (C250d coming).

Yup.

If they're only going to bring one diesel powerplant in the US for the F30, the 320d makes the most sense. Should be able to get the same mileage as the Jetta or A3 TDi, but in a nicer car.

You are not. I'd love a 1 series hatch (3 or 5 door) diesel in 6MT config, but I'd be equally satisfied with a 320d F31.

I don t think BMW will offer the same output as in Europe for the US diesel models...
In Europe the 20d & 25d models (2L: 184 hp & 218 hp) are the best in their class and have a very strong demand (more than 50% of 5 series for example are sold with one of these engines!).
On another hand, being in US I wouldn't buy any of these engines in front of a 28i model

The situation is almost the same for the 3L diesel vs petrol, 35d will never be better in US than a 35i!
The markets (Europe vs US) are very different so some diesel models have no sense there!

Still curious to see different opinions with some solid arguments!

I really am a fan of diesel engines coming to the US but why is there a premium on these cars to buy?

All depends which diesel engine you're speaking of. In Belgium (where I'm from), the 520d and 520i are the same price (within 500 euros).

I should have been more specific. Let's take the 335d for the US, the 2011 msrp was $44,150 compared to a 2012 335i msrp of $42,400. To better sell the diesel in the US there needs to be more incentive to buy.

Everyone seems to clamour for a 320d, but I will continue to suggest that a 325d with the ~215hp N47S would actually be the perfect car for the US. Acceleration should be close to a 328i, while it would be about 25% more efficient (using 525d and 528i numbers as a basis for comparison).

I suspect the premium is due to the heavy emissions equipment the US/Canada forces manufacturers to put on their diesel models.

Look at VW, for example. a TDI Highline Golf 5 with 6MT is $29,395 CAD while the 2.5L petrol Highline Golf 5 with 6MT is $27,095 CAD. That's a 2.3k difference and actually a bigger premium than BMWs, although not by much.

I wouldn't mind a 325d either. Just as long as the F3x diesel doesn't cost an arm and a leg (like the 335d did) and has an MT option.

God, this is annoying. BMW uses emissions, mileage etc to kill NA engines, then brings the most powerful and thirsty diesel to US. Just bring the 320d/325d here.

Looking at the number of 2011 3 Series models and drivetrains, 10% was a pretty healthy share for the 335d.

Isn't there incentive enough? Great performance number with excellent MPG. I don't need much more than that...

I rather save the extra money and get even better performance with a 335i with good gas mileage then.

ditto. Why would they pay to certify an engine that is essentially obsolete and not sold in any current 7er for sale in the N American market?

And who writes these Bimmerpost articles anyway? The C&D article does not claim that the engine in the current X5 xDrive 35d will be used in the 7er!

If there is any truth to this C&D rumor, then they'll come over with an N57 equipped 740d that will be Euro VI compliant and will also pass the EPA standards. This engine would hopefully also be offered in the 5er. (Curiously in Europe this comes in the 535d and not a 540d? )

Right now they are offering a 6 cyl diesel in the F30 & F31 330d. Fortunately it is Euro VI compliant! Does this mean that it will end up coming over here? Fingers crossed!

If they do offer a 740d and 540d, will they also certify a 4cyl diesel for the 3er sedan to broaden their diesel offerings in N America? This is my hope- better yet the touring

They haven't announced any plans for a 325d anywhere yet, so we'll see about that option.
