Hello, with great success, I would like to share the procedure I use on how to handle the situation where you accidentally wash your Comfort Access Key Fob. Follow these steps for a 95% recovery:

1. Remove and safely discard the battery. (I say safely because a child or pet could die if it swallows or chews these batteries)

2. With fob key and battery removed and with cover removed, shake out excess water.

3. Please all fob pieces on a vent or fan and force dry air on all components for 36 to 48 hours.

4. Install new battery, and test. Make sure you understand the procedure in starting the car with a dead fob battery in case fob conks out or ends up with intermittent and sporadic failure.

5. The fob and fob battery are both supervised. Look for any error on Idrive and if it works without error for a week, you're probably fine.

6. The main trick here is to get that battery removed and discarded ASAP. Why, because, as you know water is conductive and components can be damaged when submersed into water while powered.

7. Water really only does its damage when the device is powered. The CA fob is alway powered as it listens continuously for a ping from your bimmer. Clean, demineralized water is used during electronic production, so that alone is not the issue. By drying the key over 2 to 3 days you will stop the corrosive impact.
8. Don't worry about long term corrosive damage. You will be on your third BMW (since this one) before the effects of such corrosion are discovered.
9. The only caveat is in the case where your fob was marginal to begin with. In such a case, you may find that your fob could not withstand being washed and the above procedure will not work.
10. Post these instructions near your washer and dryer if your SO does the wash (lucky you!).
