740i or 750i?

Hello everyone,

First time posting in any thread over a 3-series forum, feels like I'll accidentally click on black caviar or something.
So I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. My father's birthday is coming up and it's the big 5-0 this year. He's been driving a Rav-4 for 6 years now, he hates it, I despise it, it's got to go. He deserves a proper luxury car so I'm planning on surprising him with a 7-series this year. Not considering a 5 cause I've been seeing the midlife crisis creep up on him lately so I have to up the stakes.

In a leasing standpoint, is the 750i really worth the $250+ per month over the 740i? At the same time I can't help but cringe knowing they put the same motor from a 340i, it's an insult. But nevertheless, what are your thoughts on the differences. Is the 740i really that bad? Or is the 750i just that good?

Thank you in advance

Cheers

I got a 740i because I just needed a smooth sailing saloon that can be slightly sporty. The B58 is plenty enough power for this purpose. I do plan on getting a piggyback tune which should bring it to around 400 hp.

When I need a pure sports car, I have my options. If it were my only car, I would get the 750i.

No! Normally, I would always tell you to go the 750. However, the new 7's 740 is freaking amazing. (Now, I can't get it since I love diesels).

However, it's is downright scary how much power the 740 has.

Plus, the 740 will work harder than the 750 and this makes for better fun if you like using the paddle shifters.

But, especially for dear old dad's sake: get him the 740 because the gas savings is huge.

Coming from a 2013 Viper with over 670 hp, the 740 really isn't as bad as you would think. I did like the 750 I originally drove, so I was hesitant to drive a 740, but the turbo motor makes the car feel very quick. I also enjoy that my range till empty can show over 620 miles on one tank, if I drive in eco mode, and the fuel economy is great. You will have zero regret with the 740, unless your dad moonlights at the illegal street races.

Thank you guys for your feedback you guys rock. Wasn't expecting so much in favor of the 740i haha. Really changed my mind on it.

Malu59RT What a transition between 2 complete different ends of the spectrum what happened? lol. And 620 miles on 1 tank good God

So I've been sitting with my dad the other day showing some car videos. I tried leaning him towards the 650i/M6 but failed No offense
He liked the new 5 design but he kept going back to the 7.

2 things I know he wants for sure, Black paint or dark color of some sort (I'm killing to get my hands on a Ruby Black) and M-Package, man has taste. Going over my head a little but he loved the M760i Individual wheels but don't think that's possible on a 740i/750i.

I'm talking to some brokers and they're giving crazy good deals on the 7's. The 750i they're giving out to your average 740i lease. 740i lease lowest I've ever seen, this is going to be a tough one.

Couldn't find any direct comparison videos between the 740i and 750i, and since you guys really impressed me with the 740i I'm going to head down the dealer and test drive both myself.

I'll report back on any findings

Thanks again everyone

Wife gets car sick when I drive like an a$$hole, plus we are looking to start a family and need something more family friendly. She is a huge BMW fan, and wanted an X6, we compromised on a 7 series. She fell asleep on both test drives of the 7 series, and didn't like the CTS-V that we were considering.

Untz,

I took these photos last night while driving home. The miles to empty is just an estimate, but still very impressive. I'm going to see if I can get it close to 700. Funny the more I drive it, the higher the estimate goes

OP, Your Dad will love the 740i!

I think the 750i is a bit overpowered! The difference for me was about $80-90 from my dealership so I went with the V8.

I do enjoy revving out my cars once in a while, while I have not done so in the 750i just yet, I can imagine I would be breaking many laws by the end of 2nd gear. Sometimes I wish I got the 740i, as this is just TOO fast!

Those numbers are unreal. Is your commute mostly highway?

Without a doubt it would be less over here because street or highway it's always traffic in LA. But still, most we've both seen was 400mi in his e39 528i (when it was still "new"). So anything more than that I'm sure he'll appreciate lol. Can't imagine V8 numbers in these streets. Probably fill every couple hours.

Too fast is pretty good feedback lol. He drives my 477whp M3 and every time he goes WOT he chuckles and comments "disgusting," in a good way lol.

From all the feedback from you guys it looks like it's all pointing towards the 740i. Only thing keeping me with the 750i are the lease rates below as of now. Hoping to test drive 740i/750i this weekend.

All with a 36 month lease, $3k down, 10k miles per year, and w/o tax on the monthly.

740i $91k MSRP - $815/mo
740i $88k MSRP - $775/mo

750i $109k MSRP - $1049/mo

What are your guys' thoughts on these?

And thank you so far for all the feedback guys

Id say the first 740i is the sweet spot. I think saving $200 a month and going with a 740i would be the move!

Let us know the specific options, I highly recommend getting the M Sport pack as well as the Drivers assistance packages.

UntzUntzUntz , yes, that would be mostly highway. Lots of idling, stop and go, and acceleration would definitely drop that number.

Calculation is actually based on driving habits. So, as time goes on, you should see changes in miles as well as average consumption.

Oh I know that, but for the last two fill-ups, I've been driving relatively the same, trying to maximize fuel economy and see how high I can get the meter to read. At some point you would think it can't go any higher. Currently the car thinks I can go 741 miles on a tank

Untz, keep us posted on your father's surprise.

If your car has low mileage, then, logically, brief habit changes are likely to have more of an effect.

I owned a 2012 (F02) 740Li for five years and loved it. Having come from a 2008 E93 M3, I really did miss having a V8. Sure, the 740 was efficient, but the sound of the car on start-up always left me a bit hollow. For 2016, I stepped up to the (G12) 750i and LOVE having a V8 again.

So if efficiency is paramount, definitely go for the 740. If, however, there's a measure of "soul feeding" informing the purchase, get the 750. I did, and am not looking back

Have you looked at 740e? I am underwhelmed by 530e (248 HP), but hybrid G12 gets the same HP as its Gas counterpart.

5 GASOLINE ENGINES
  • 740i 8AT (326 HP)
  • 740Li 8AT (326 HP)
  • 750i xDrive 8AT (450 HP)
  • 750Li xDrive 8AT (450 HP)
  • M760Li xDrive 8AT (610 HP)
8 DIESEL ENGINES
  • 730d 8AT (265 HP)
  • 730d xDrive 8AT (265 HP)
  • 730Ld 8AT (265 HP)
  • 730Ld xDrive 8AT (265 HP)
  • 740d xDrive 8AT (320 HP)
  • 740Ld xDrive 8AT (320 HP)
  • 750d xDrive 8AT (400 HP)
  • 750Ld xDrive 8AT (400 HP)
3 HYBRID ENGINES
  • 740e 8AT (326 HP)
  • 740Le 8AT (326 HP)

Thank you everyone for all your help!

Even though this happened a month ago, I'll finally share with you guys. It was a surprise my dad will never forget.

Even though 85% of you pointed me to the 740i, which logically would be the right choice. If I were buying the car for myself, 740i is a no-brainer. However, I thought that maybe the next car a 740i or similar would be appropriate. 50 is an important number and I didn't want to leave anything out for him on that day. Since he's turning 50, the only model that has 50 in it is the 750! LOL I'll like to introduce you to our new family member:

Name: 750ifront.jpg
Views: 6681
Size: 1.67 MB
Name: 750irear.jpg
Views: 6575
Size: 1.45 MB

Settled for the 2017 because the only difference between 17 and 18 is the price and nothing else.

She's equipped with M Package w/ 20 inch wheels, Executive package, Drivers assistant and assistant plus, cold weather package, and it comes with that large key with a screen! Not sure if that was optional but I found that neat toy in the trunk.

Sapphire Black on the outside and Black Nappa Leather on the inside, that's just how he likes his color combo. I was itching to find a carbon black one! But no luck with anything less than a $130k sticker.

Not sure what kind of German Gods they have over at BMW, but this is one incredible machine. Too much car I'd say for many. Compared this to a brand new S Class and it's crazy how identical they are.

Thank you everyone who contributed

Would anyone recommend a small trunk lip? If OEM makes it or aftermarket. Just looks too flat in the back without a lip.
