Production of Mercedes-AMG's first hypercar - codenamed Project One - will be limited to less than 300 units, the car maker has confirmed at the Detroit motor show.

Mercedes boss Dr Dieter Zetsche said his brand's model, which will make use of a Mercedes F1 hybrid-derived powertrain, would be the first of its kind on the road.

"Our aim is for [the Project One] to be the first street legal car with an F1 engine," he said. "Secondly, that it is perceived as the ultimate sports car. We have relatively good indications that this is possible."

It's not known how or if the Mercedes power unit will be changed for the road car. Like the F1 engines, the road car's unit wil be engineered at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth, Northamptonshire.

Mercedes previewed its model in an image that was accompanied by the strapline 'Creating benchmark driving pleasure', suggesting that the new model will focus on driver enjoyment rather than lap times. Despite this, it will be the best performing Mercedes-AMG car yet built and is set to develop around 1000bhp. It will have four-wheel drive.

The first official picture reveals a large roof scoop and louvre vents on the rear upper panel, confirming that it will be mid-engined. A wide stance is also evident, but no other details are visible.

A price of £1.5 million (€2m) has been suggested. Insiders say the final production car will be revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show and that it will likely be sold out by that point.

The Aston Martin AM-RB 001, which is limited to 150 units, will also use an all-carbonfibre construction, with an F1-style carbonfibre monocoque and F1-derived performance technology. First customer cars are due to be delivered next year.

Probably... but in my book, flying hypercar is still better than no hypercar... Do you hear me BMW? Stop making FWD cr..p and build real supercar and give Mercedes some challenge in F1 finally!

They tried that once already, didn't work out for them too well. After supplying engines to WilliamsF1 from 2000 to 2005, BMW was a full works team from 2006 through 2009 (read:expensive), and scored a whopping one single win in Canada '08. I wouldn't expect to see BMW back in F1 any time soon, if ever.

Yeah, you an everyone else pining for a BMW supercar (never mind hypercar) keep beating that dead horse ... which, by the way, has been dead for 36 years and counting.



BMW has never been in the ultra-performance business. The only time it was, it merely homologated a Lamborghini design as that company recovered from bankruptcy -- basically, BMW was handed a supercar. Even in its F1 days, it wasn't even close to thinking about making a street-legal car based on that tech.

I've posted about this aspect, too: BMW does not have the financial backing for such a project, either. Every single major car manufacturer that also produces a supercar either has a parent company with deep pockets behind it or is far, far larger than BMW is or ever has been.

BMW picks its spots. This ain't one of 'em, and it never will be.

And with this announcement, we have what could very well be the hottest premiere at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Accompanying the short press release is yet another teaser image of spectacular Mercedes-AMG Project One, which reveals its massive fenders and roof scoop, in addition to what appears to be LED headlights, and the 'AMG' lettering engraved in the front bumper's air intake.

As expected, the German hypercar will have seating for two, and it will bring the Formula 1 hybrid technology to the road, producing more than 1,000 horses from the 1.6-liter turbocharged petrol engine used in the brand's F1 car.

The internal combustion unit is said to be supplemented by four electric motors, "one for each front wheel, one on the crankshaft, and one in the engine turbocharger", according to the AMG head honcho, Tobias Moers. In this form, the Project One will be able to reach speeds in excess of 350km/h (217mph), and it should be able to rev up to 11,000 rpm.

Surprisingly, the Mercedes-AMG Project One that will displayed in Frankfurt won't be the final production version, but rather a near-production prototype, as the automaker refers to it by saying "showcar".
