Have You Ever Regretted a Car Purchase?

When you look back on all the cars you have owned, any stand out as particularly regretful? About 6 years ago I bought a VW Passat. Not a bad car, it was just incredibly boring...on the drive home I knew I had made a mistake. That was my first "non enthusiast" car...and thankfully, my last. 6 months later I was in a WRX

My last (2015) 535i lol. Thought I could spec it to be a "sports" sedan. Wrong. Nothing sporty about it even with the adaptive suspension. The individual amaro brown interior is gorgeous in the Jet Black car, but that does nothing for the fact that it is an overweight barge.

So I gave it to my parents and got the M3. Couldn't be happier.

Nope. Ridiculously picky. I'll drive the car I'm in until I find one that suits me 100%, and if I cant, I'll drive it into the ground and then some. Did that before too.

Occasionally. Have bought dozens of cars over the years. Worse ones that come to mind:

Nissan Xterra (no mechanical issues just too rough and bouncy for my wife and no back seat space to two little kids)

Jeep Grand Cherokee (many mechanical issues and only got a V6 so it was slow)

There was the period after my divorce where I made a bunch of questionable car decisions trying to "save money" and all I did was hop from car to car trying to be satisfied in something I could afford.

2009 BMW 135i was the first mistake. It was more than I could afford and my 2005 330i ZHP Dinan was a more special car.

When I realized I couldn't afford the 135 I jumped into a 2010 Honda Element. The trick interior was cool but the thing was about as fast as a snail in a snowstorm.

I traded that for a 2012 Ford Focus, still deluding myself that I could do without the performance.

That lasted a year until I took a bath trading it in on a 2013 Ford Focus ST. This was a good car but the seats were awfully uncomfortable.

I'm now in my decent X1 35 M-Sport and looking forward to the arrival of my M3 so I hope the regret days are behind me.

In all honesty...my 335d.

I've had it in the shop more times then every other car I have owned combined in 25+ years in my 3 years of ownership.

The fundamental premise is those who own these cars absolutely love the powertrains and what they can do as a commuter/cruiser.

And we absolutely hate BMW for designing a beta, bug ridden, overly complex, stupid expensive SCR system that fails, fails and fails some more.

They gave us a kilo of columbia's finest marching powder and expect us not to party like its 1985.

In hindsight, I would have sought out a different E90 with less power and the torque addiction never would have formed.

My '16 X6 50i. My bad, I never test drove before ordering. I went from a '10 X6 50i, to a '13 X6M. Only difference there was power, otherwise same driving feel. Due to packages in the '16 M, I decided to spec out a loaded 50i instead. I was freaking miserable. I lasted 4 months. Traded it in for '16 M. Much better than the 50i but still miss my '13 every day.

Real world problems, I know. I still feel like a little brat complaining about a $100k vehicle....

I bought an 89 Toyota Corolla GT-S on an impulse. Didn't need it, just wanted it. Fun car, I didn't think the lack of headroom would be an issue, but it was.

Nothing really on the car front. I buy cars for the purpose I intend it for. Daily beater. Garage queen/weekend warrior. The 2013 135i I have now is the first time I got a nice car that I would normally put into the garage queen/weekend warrior category but use it as a daily driver as it's my only car now.

What sort of fits into this category but related to motorcycles is my 2009 Ducati 848. Wanted to try something different over the inline 4 Japanese sportbikes I have owned thus far. In the beginning, it was cool to be in the "club". It was also interesting the amount of attention the bike got. Parked, I would watch people constantly walking up to it checking it out over other parked bikes next to mine. Had a couple of guys delay walking into a restaurant because they wanted to hear my bike take off from a stop at a traffic light. And then there was this girl in a car that was taking pictures of my bike while sitting in traffic. All the mystique wore off as I got more seat time on the bike. The tank was not shaped to my preference where I could easily grip the tank with my knees like I can with the wider inline 4 fuel tanks. I ran into a bunch of problems with the bike with the two worst being a failed head gasket on the horizontal cylinder and the infamous fuel tank debacle where Ducati gave all of us 848/1098/1198 owners the middle finger. A bit after I got my 848, I got to run a BMW S1000RR on the track. Man is that a good bike. I tell everyone had I waited and got the chance to run the S1000RR before purchase, I would have a S1000RR in my garage now over the 848. And this is with the about $5000 of additional upgrades I did to the 848 that included a full Ohlins suspension package dialed for my body weight and the swap out of the two piece Brembo front calipers for the monoblocks put on the 1198s. But I don't regret my purchase of the 848 that much where I would sell/trade it in for the heck of it.

Hard to not be disappointed when comparing the exhaust note to the e92, but the F80 over all is a way better car. Have you driven the comp pack? I have heard this fixes all the little issues and is a much better car then just the base. Although you are still not going to get that song from the V8

Wow, color me surprised at all of the newer BMWs making the list. Forewarned is forearmed as they say, so thanks.

A few years ago I got a bug up my a** to own a Subaru SVX. Not just any SVX though - I wanted to find one that had been converted to manual gearbox. Surprisingly I found one locally and went to take a look. Every instinctive 'flight' alert was on full volume but I bought it anyway. 2 years later I actually got to drive it legally. 2 months later I sold it at a gigantic loss. To this day I still look back on it and think 'there was a really nice car in there, it just needed a little work...'

2004 infinity G35 coupe

Loved the car-power, looks etc but due to my impatience I hastily traded my 2000 Audi A4 for an automatic...being a manual driver all my life I thought I would grow to enjoy the 'tiptronic' or whatever it was called...WRONG. Very disappointing...would have kept it much longer had it been a stick.

Yep, F30 is top of my list. Boring, disconnected car. And it's an LCI. Wife totaled her X1 35i and needed a replacement. Likely killed the BMW brand for her.

1978 Toyota Celica GT 5-speed.

This was the second gen Celica. The first gen looked amazing, like a mini-Mustang, very sporty. A friend had one in high school, and I thought it was the coolest looking car at the time.

After high school, I started getting into muscle cars and bought a 1974 Camaro Z28, followed by a 1971 Olds 4-4-2 W-30, followed by a 1965 Corvette 396 roadster.

After that for some reason, I thought going into a smaller, 4-cylinder Celica GT would be a practical thing to do, and still keep me in somewhat of a sporty car. Could not have been more wrong! That car bored me to death almost immediately.

Kept it for 6 months, and replaced it with a brand new 1980 Camaro Z28. All was right with the universe again.

E46 M3. I couldn't have despised that car more. Sold it after a month.

S54 had nothing to do with it, my favorite car of all time is the Z4M which I'll drive until the wheels fall off.

The W204 was such a POS, I don't understand why it was as popular as it was. The interior was incredibly cheap and ugly, especially before the refresh. The 3-series was heads and shoulders a better car at the time.
