BMW recalls 200,000 vehicles....

Just read the news on cnn.com. BMW is recalling 200,000 vehicles.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- BMW AG is recalling 200,000 vehicles over concerns that the front passenger air bag may not deploy in a crash.
The German automaker says the recall involves the 2006 3 Series, the 2004-2006 5 Series, and the 2004-2006 X3 compact sport utility vehicle.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its Web site Wednesday that small cracks could develop in a seat detection mat and lead to the front passenger air bags to be deactivated.
It would also turn on the passenger air bag "on-off" light. NHTSA says the head protection system would not be affected.
The company said last month there had been no injuries or accidents tied to the problem.

What about 1 series fuel pump? Hopefully that gets into the limelight soon!

I just saw that myself... However, I dropped mine off two days ago because my pass airbag light was intermittently lit with passengers in the car. They claim no problem because it didn't draw a fault on the system... this is a tad too coincidental.

What do you think? should I request the plate be replaced as per the recall?

You can't request a recall. Your car has to be on the recall list. Besides, there is no recall for the 1-series yet.

Front Passenger Seat Air Bag Occupant Detection Sensor Mat Recall 08V-384

Today, BMW announced a voluntary recall regarding the front passenger air bag seat mat sensor involving approximately 200,000 Model Year 2004-06 vehicles. Affected are certain Model Year 2006 3-Series (with sport seat), Model Year 2004-06 5-Series (with standard and sport seats), and Model Year 2004-06 X3 vehicles.

BMW has found that the sensor mat may become damaged during vehicle usage, depending upon the manner and frequency of the front passenger’s entry and exit. BMW will begin sending customer letters in late September 2008, repair instructions will be provided at that time.

Affected owners may continue to drive their vehicles; however customers should contact their BMW center if the air bag warning lamp and the passenger air bag “on-off” lamp are illuminated simultaneously. In this situation, BMW recommends customers not to use the front passenger seat and have the vehicle serviced immediately. At the present time, we are unaware of any accidents or injuries as a result of this issue.

Until customer letters are sent out and repair instructions are available, please refer to SI B65 75 06. It is important not to order or replace seat occupancy mats unless directed to by the DIS test plan.
