[2015 FIM MotoGP™] Red Bull Grand Prix of The Americas: April 12, 2015

The 2015 MotoGP™ World Championship continues with the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas, after a thrilling opening race in Qatar.

As the paddock prepares for the race at the 5.5 km Circuit of the Americas, there are a number of talking points on everyone’s lips with fans wondering if it could possibly get any better after an incredible opening round under the floodlights in Qatar. It is the third year in a row that the MotoGP™ World Championship returns to COTA, with Honda having completed a 1-2 (Marquez and Pedrosa) at each previous race.

Ducati confirmed that they are “back” in Qatar, completing the reversal in the Italian manufacturers fortunes since Luigi Dall’Igna joined the factory team as Sporting Director from Aprilia at the end of the 2013 season. The new GP15 showed that it was not just a “one-lap wonder” on the softer tyre option and Dovizioso will fancy his chances after he claimed his first podium for Ducati in Austin last season. One change for the Ducati Team and Pramac Racing, is that they will now have to make do with 22 litres of fuel as opposed to 24, after achieving three podiums in the last two seasons.

About the circuit
The Circuit Of The Americas is the first purpose-built Grand Prix facility in the U.S. near Austin, Texas, with a 5.513km track and a capacity for 120,000 fans. Construction of the impressive 1000-acre facility was completed late in 2012, with MotoGP lining up at the track for the first time in 2013. One of its more distinctive features is near 41m-elevation change with an impressive incline at the end of the home-straight followed by a sharp left. The circuit is one of the most varied on the GP circuit, with a mix of fast straights and tight hairpins, with most sections mirroring at least some part of a famous track around the world. It was designed by well-known German architect and circuit designer Hermann Tilke. The driving direction is counter clockwise and has a total of 20 corners with 9 right turns and 11 left turns.

Fun Facts:
• In 2013 Austin became the fourth different circuit to be used for motorcycle grand prix racing in America. In total, there have been 26 previous grand prix events hosted in the USA: Daytona – 2, Laguna Seca – 15, Indianapolis – 7 and Austin – 2.

• The same two riders have finished first/second in both the previous MotoGP races at Austin, Marc Marquez followed home by teammate Dani Pedrosa.

• Last year at COTA, Marc Marquez topped every practice session, qualified on pole with a new pole position record lap, led every lap of the race and set a new race lap record.

• Third place finisher in the MotoGP race at Austin last year was Andrea Dovizioso – his first podium finish on the factory Ducati.

• The first Yamaha rider to cross the line last year in Austin was Bradley Smith, in fifth place.

• Marquez won the MotoGP race in Austin last year by 4.124 seconds – his largest margin of victory in a MotoGP class, in a dry weather race.

• Honda riders have won the last Ten MotoGP races in the USA. The last non-Honda MotoGP winner in the country was Jorge Lorenzo, at Laguna Seca in 2010.

• At the grand prix in Austin, Nicky Hayden is scheduled to become only the fourth rider to reach the milestone of 200 starts in the premier-class of grand prix racing. Hayden is the first American rider to reach this milestone, and joins Valentino Rossi, Alex Barros, and Lois Capirossi in the exclusive “200 club”.

• At the GP of the Americas last year, 40-year-old Colin Edwards announced that 2014 would be his final season of racing before retiring.

MotoAmerica may be new, but the AMA Superbike Series isn’t. MotoAmerica, the new home of the AMA Superbike Series, will run three of its five classes during the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas weekend – headlined by its premiere Superbike class.

The Superbike class will feature the likes of defending four-time AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes, his Monster Energy Graves Yamaha teammate Cameron Beaubier and the factory Yoshimura Suzuki Superbikes pairing of Roger Hayden, the younger brother of MotoGP star Nicky Hayden, and his teammate Jake Lewis.

In addition to the 1000cc Superbikes, MotoAmerica also brings its Superstock 1000 class to Circuit of The Americas with the more stocked based 1000s running in the same races as the Superbikes, yet scored separately. It will be interesting to see just how many of the Superstock bikes can run up near the Superbikes in what will be the debut of the series at COTA.

The up-and-coming stars of the sport will be featured in the Supersport class, a series that features 600cc machinery and a grid packed with motorcycles from several different manufacturers, including Yamaha, Suzuki, Triumph, Kawasaki and MV Agusta. The action will be hot and heavy as riders in the Supersport class try to prove their worth for a move up to the Superbike/Superstock 1000 class in years to come.

Bridgestone MotoGP™ Preview - Round 2: Americas

Tuesday, 7 April 2015
Circuit of the Americas, United States

Bridgestone slick compounds: Front: Soft, Medium & Hard; Rear: Soft & Hard (Symmetric) & Medium (Asymmetric)
Bridgestone wet tyre compounds: Soft (Main) & Hard (Alternative)

Round two of the 2015 MotoGP™ season takes place at the stunning Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas; a technical circuit that features the longest straight on the calendar and significant elevation changes.

In addition to its 1.200 kilometre long back-straight, the Circuit of the Americas incorporates every type of corner into its 5.515 kilometres with heavy braking zones, elevation changes and a combination of slow and fast turns, creating a significant challenge for the riders and tyres. The section from turns three to ten is particularly challenging, as the numerous changes of direction in quick succession demand very high levels of front-end feel and optimal bike balance.

Although there are more left-hand than right-hand corners at COTA, the presence of some fast right-hand corners generate high tyre temperatures and overall, the layout places similar loads on both shoulders of the tyres. For this year’s Americas Grand Prix, only one of the three rear slick options, the medium compound, is asymmetric and has a softer compound on the left shoulder, while both the soft and hard compound rear slicks are symmetric in construction. The rear slick options for the Factory Honda and Yamaha riders are the medium and hard compound, while the rest of the field has access to the soft and medium compound rear slicks. High levels of front-end feel and stability are critical at COTA and this year Bridgestone is offering three front slick compound options - soft, medium and hard – to ensure consistent performance over a wide range of weather and track conditions.

The main wet tyre for the Americas Grand Prix is the soft compound, while every rider will also have access to up to two sets of wet tyre in the alternative, hard compound.

BREMBO BRAKE REPORT

Difficulty for the braking system:

<--------------------- MEDIUM --------------------->

The Austin track should be considered moderately demanding on the bikes' braking systems. In fact, there are at least 3 braking sections characterized by extremely abrupt deceleration. The first braking section after the finish line is worth a mention, where the bikes go from about 310 kph to about 65 kph in roughly 200 meters, as well as turn T12 which is characterized by a braking distance of more than 330 meters.

Ridiculous last few minutes of Q2 today. So many broken lap records and then MM had to go do it again in typical MM fashion! What a treat.

Quali was very exciting. I was sitting in main granstand when Marquez's bike quit and he sprinted down pit lane. Crowd was cheering, then he set pole on his back up and crowd went nuts. It was awesome. Marquez has quite the fan base now in Austin.

Great race today. This season is going to be entertaining.

Marquez is an alien from outer space. That's the only explanation.

No spoiler here guys but another awesome set of races in every class Moto3, Moto2 and GP so much better than the bore fest that was the Chinese F1 procession.

Epic performance from VR46 today. After the first few laps I was just hoping for him to podium let alone to chase down MM. Wished MM stayed on though for even more excitement on the last lap. It is what it is though, one of the rare times that MM's mistake actually cost him.

What about those Ducati's, they're right there every race now! And what the hell happened Lorentho? That kid might be mentally done, he was the heir apparent to the throne when Stoner decided to retire. Then MM happened and Rossi resurgence. What an exciting start to the season!

Does Fox plan on showing Moto2 and Moto3? They showed MLS soccer instead of those races as scheduled. I am royally pissed!
