New 740 x drive or used 2016 750
I have pretty much decided on a 7 instead of the M550. It is mostly because of the air suspension on the 7. I haven't been able to drive a M550, the local dealer has an "executive " car driven supposedly by the owner of the dealership but they "don't want to put miles on it" for a test drive. I have driven 540s and the F10 550 msport.
The ride has some impact harshness on our lovely roads around here. Driving any 7 the ride has no harshness. I see New M550s around 78 to 80 with options I want. I see New 740 s at 89 and up with nice options and many items are standard. Now I also see many 2016 750s some with great options like massage seats for $63 to $70. It's making me think I can save some $ and get the nicely optioned 750 with the V8 |

Hi x5mannn, a nice dilemma to have! We don't have the 550 over here in the UK so can't comment on that however, the suspension on the 7 and the list of standard kit over a 5 is what makes many of us here in Europe/UK decide for the 7 as you have also noted (especially important on those roads you have ) to be fair, we don't have to deal with the wild temperature swings you guys have or all the snow!
Can't say I can suggest one over the other but some points if you haven't considered them so far: -obviously you'd be using winter tires in winter which makes the biggest difference but if the 750 isn't x drive and you are coming from the X5...would you be willing to go without 4 wheel drive and go back to the 'fun' of a rear wheel drive (powerful) car in winter? That could be a decision maker there personally but you may be fine with that. -over here in Europe they are stopping production of the V8 models in the 7, X5 and X6 for a while, at least officially the statement is that they will be adapting them to meet the emissions standards Euro 6c but if that doesn't happen, the V8 may go the long silent path and so getting one before they are gone could be something to think about. I don't know if they'll continue the V8 in other markets (like the US) so this may not be a factor at all, but something to check out maybe. -I find the options make the car really, so if you were fine with the loss of x drive and otherwise would gain a lot of options that the 740 wouldn't have...and all else being equal (besides cost) then I'd go for the option heavy car...they make the driving experience so much nicer and enjoyable. Do be aware that many of the 'semi-autonomous' features like lane monitoring and assist/active cruise control and such are very weather dependent and even here in the UK I've had a few times where they have stopped working due to very heavy rain or snow. (we don't get or 'do' snow here, and the radar unit in front ices up sometimes so stops allowing the active cruise to work, same goes for the cameras or radar units in the front bumpers, so do be aware of this limitation in winter that some features may not work or may only work for a while due to snow coverage... Enjoy whatever 7 you decide for, I'm hooked and can't imagine going back to a lower model now after having tasted the sweet life of luxury. (on my second 7). Hope these points help, if only a bit, do let us know what you decide and why in case it helps others in future as well! (or ask any questions that do come up still). Safe travels.

The suspension on the 7 series vs the 5 is a major step up in terms of comfort. It's one of the main reasons for going for the car if you ask me. The roads in the UK aren't wonderful but the 7 can mask that pretty well.
The M550i is going to be quicker if that's important but not hugely so I'd imagine. The 750i will still be a rapid car with a lovely V8. Depends what you want. If your more into the drivers cars the smaller more nibble models are better. However other than that reason there's little against getting a really nice luxury car which is the 7 series. |
