It's certainly a good place to visit, just not as extensive as I'd hoped. I did hire an M5 for half the day though from there and drove around the local area. Nearly wrote it off when I hit some black ice on a little village back road

I'll be over in Germany a number of times this year with the car, my dad lives over there so I drive over fairly regularly. Maybe if timings work out we can meet up but it depends on when the baby comes and from when I will be tied to staying at home!

Yeah I think a likely earlier option while still getting used to driving such a large car. Don't want to have to be also thinking if I'm on the correct side of the road at the same time, that might be too much for my mind to handle at once

Will let you know and thanks for the offer. Nice to make some virtual friends with similar interests

Shame there's no tow bar option for the M760Li, I could have hooked you up to give you a boost

I noticed they've made an advert of my M760Li now. It's very close to the spec I've picked. I'd like to think they saw my choices and were blown away by it they had to build themselves one almost the same

I'm not a religious person but every day I make it home in one piece I say a little prayer. If cars had a sex it's definitely a female, very temperamental and randomly wants to kill you for no real reason

Not only that but you'll be utterly tired having a baby. Last thing I imagine you'd want is a long trip. That and having a baby changes things, you'll want to stay home and spend time with your new son / daughter anyway. Contrats as having a kid is one of the great things to happen to someone, almost as exciting as a new car

There's a bit at the bottom with all the Individual stuff but not really in English but can make out the key words. At least they painted it the right colour

I'll see what I can do to translate for you, a proper dream car FastLaneJB

Besides the 007 individual options, can't even think of anything that is missing!

Great that yours is moving now a pace as well, hope you get it soon, you've been very patient in waiting!

So, without further ado the translation (and a big caveat emptor here (or as the Germans say: "Zu Risiken und Nebenwirkungen lesen Sie die Packungsbeilange und fragen Sie Ihren Arzt oder Apotheker." for risks and side effects, read the instructions and ask your doctor or pharmacist!))

pull a finger out would you FastLaneJB! Just because you don’t mind waiting doesn’t mean the rest of us can

Likely you’ll get good news soon, shouldn’t be long now.

Today was a stunning evening drive through the new forest and cross country with sunshine and clear roads! Spring is here (for a day)...

There's a lack of nice scenic roads where I am unfortunately, it's pretty flat as well. Funnily I noticed on the M5 after having it a while and ending up somewhere quite hilly that it downshifts a gear or two when you lift off the throttle going down a hill to stop the car from accelerating too much. Thought that was pretty cool but rarely see it do it.

Read that another cold snap might be coming. Winter might have one more go before we start heading for the warmer days. If you'd not heard that one, you can that weather forecast for free

That sounds a cool feature of the M5 ^ another car I have always meant to give a spin but never done...will have to ask the dealer when mine is getting serviced to try the 760 or M5 if I can arrange it in advance. (very dangerous that though!), service is still a couple of months away.

Heh, yes, seen that we're supposed to get some more cold weather and snow potentially this weekend...hoping not. I washed the car today and could get rid of the salt and dirt from the last few weeks so she's looking very prim and proper tonight, would hate to see her dirty again so quickly.

Did smile as it was getting quite dark by the time I drove through Bath and with the traffic, I noticed that the chap behind me had to hold a hand up to stop being blinded by the intensity of my brake lights (when this clean!)...Good thing he didn't get in me 'frickin laser sights!

Re: weather and borrowing others hard work!: one of the best gigs I ever did was two years in a row I went with the Canadian Navy and did promotional tour up the Great Lakes in the Summer...6 weeks of bliss, go for a spin during the days, do some diving with National Geographic (I was on a ship that had manned submersibles and mixed gas divers, hence the need for a meteorologist as hard to dive or recover divers if you can't find them again or recover them due to seas, etc...) and then each night back in port in some new place and be able to check out new locations and stunning scenery all up and down the St. Lawrence and Great Lakes region...something that people pay really silly money to do privately if they are lucky! Anyway, during both stints, for nearly 4 weeks of the trips, I could just tune into a couple of radio stations and hear the forecasts, situation and such and then check one or two charts of my own (instead of proper 4 hour slog) to give the captain a weather briefing each day and then bob was my uncle and I could suntan and eat ice cream....Ah, the good old days!

Was good while it lasted...imagine the same for V12's going forward.

Safe travels.

Well the new M5 might not do it as it's a ZF 8 speed auto, might have been a dual clutch thing. Still you don't want to break your back in a car like that, the 760 is the one you want with a Comfort Plus mode still

Maybe it wasn't the brake lights but your lasers reflecting back into his eyes off the moon?

Anyway, during both stints, for nearly 4 weeks of the trips, I could just tune into a couple of radio stations and hear the forecasts, situation and such and then check one or two charts of my own (instead of proper 4 hour slog) to give the captain a weather briefing each day and then bob was my uncle and I could suntan and eat ice cream....Ah, the good old days!

Was good while it lasted...imagine the same for V12's going forward.

Safe travels.
We love going on a cruise, clearly that sounds far better but we figure it's a great way to see lots of places without much hassle. Your hotel room effectively moves around with you

However I do fancy a nice road trip type hotel with the new car. Scotland North Coast seems like an obvious bet as it should have amazing roads and views plus don't have to drive on the wrong side of the road. Though a nice trip across Europe as well at some point.

Have a question come to think about it. When I took my old 335d to Europe I noticed that the HUD would translate the speed limits into mph which was cool. However with a fully digital dash now does the car change from miles to km when your over there? As in the whole analog speedo. Seems like an obvious thing to do when you've a fully digital dash.

I can understand the attraction and why people do it, I couldn't now having spent the better part of 3 years at sea in total. Loved it, would still be there likely if I was single as the crew really can make it a dream job, and some experiences need to be had, not watched on a TV. I do like the idea of going overnight between ports of call and then having the days to explore though. ^

Well, let me know if you want company (for either trip, might be best to do an hour or two drive together first in 'lower' UK to see if we 'are compatible'...not much fun for either if driving styles and travel ethos don't match!) If possible, I'd love to do some of Scotland, only been a few times, never in my 7's and would love to see some of the Norther areas (been to Aberdeen, if one admits to that) but not North of that or West...done lower Scotland extensively West to East. Some stunning roads there too though. Equally, the continental trip I'm definitely up for and doing as well...if company in the form of another car is desired, sure we can work something out, my timings are flexible, just want to go to BMW Welt and drive down to Lake Como area and blast it proper on the old Autobahn. If you do decide to go your own route, no problem either! Would be a blast to see some pics and 'ride along' with some form of trip report if you do such things...I do for my frequent flier travels and enjoy it and others seem to as well...

To the questions: settings, you can adjust the settings to be metric (all displayed settings so cockpit, HUD, control panel, etc...) for the time you are there and you can now adjust the headlights to also be 'correct' for the continent as well so you don't have to buy the stupid sticker for the headlamps anymore. (if you did in the past)...some voodoo beam splitting functionality is reduced or limited but it works. All via idrive. Hope that helps and is what you were asking?

Yeah that sounds good. I'm not an excessively fast driver generally, I'd have lost my license quite easily if I was. Think in a 7 a sensible cruising speed in a convey makes sense. We'll need to keep a sensible distance anyway so none of the super mini's dragged into orbiting our cars gravity field clash

Yeah I can adjust the headlights on my M5 for Europe so no stupid stickers there either. The standard car was Xenons where that's not possible but got the upgraded Adaptive LED's. However I think an earlier generation of BMW's LED headlights as they aren't as good as videos I've seen on the newer 7's. Let alone lasers

Agree, I managed to get most of my speed out of my system in Germany and with motorbikes back in my crazy days...and lived to tell (amazingly). Much more sedate and regal in this car. Love the comment about the wake /gravity turbulence sucking in small cars and kids!

I do wonder if some narrow roads have lay-bys big enough for two sevens to fit? We could congest Scotland (that would be a hard border!)

I did read about the earlier LED's on BMW's being less bright, didn't have them on the F01 (xenon, non adaptive) so can't comment.

Did you want to start a separate thread on the road trip to discuss that? Hope you get some movement in the car this week, can't wait to see the pics and hear your thoughts on new to you features and coming from the M5. You'll need to watch out though that you don't end up a 'princess' like me...(although in the hierarchy, you'll be a 'queen' for sure in that stunning M760Li.

Used the whole body seat massage for the first time in a long time last night...damn is that good and had me smiling away like no one's business, must have been a sight!

Just had a call from my dealer and the car is now moving for port. He's got it estimated to be with him the week beginning 26th March so much sooner than the online people were willing to say.

Annoyingly I'm away for a long weekend at Easter so if it's not in Mon / Thur that week I wouldn't be able to pick it up. Still is what it is.

Yeah motorbikes are a whole different ball game of speed and danger

I obviously nothing scientific to proof this but I'm now writing it on the Internet so that makes it true. However I suspect the M5 might occasionally suck up a hedgehog or such off the road side when you rev it into the turbos. It's got some big intakes. Maybe even makes like 50 bhp extra for a moment at the same time.

Well if we are going to piss the Scottish off we might as well do it right

Yeah not to fully knock it but actually I think the Xenon's might have been better vs earlier gen LEDs. I don't think that's the case anymore but not much in it to warrant the switch that's for sure.

Excellent news, glad it won't be long now for you. Have you told Shell to fill the tanks of the service station the week you get it?

Might actually be best to get it after Easter as the traffic is likely to be nuts and you'd not be able to really enjoy it properly for those first drives/memories. So annoying but maybe for the best...let's wait and see, the dealer is going to want to get it on the books as handed over before month end so that may work in your favour. Fingers crossed it comes when it is good for you.

Got a few stories about my stupidity on bikes...how I lived I'll never know. Loved every minute of it though and if they would ever make a two stroke 750 or bigger bike...I'd sell the house if I had to...Nothing, and I mean nothing like the power band, light switch increase in speed and power on a two stroke for the weight of that engine...mental and addictive. I also loved that there was NO engine decompression (braking) when you roll off the throttle...it just whines away...so completely different behaviour to the bigger, heavier 4 strokes and no braking in corners unless you really brake, not just roll off the gas so you can get proper shit your pants thrills in the twisties. Don't mean the mopeds...but the racing 500 cc or bigger 4 cylinder 2 strokes that had an incredible power to weight ratio. My last bike was a heavy GSXR 750 (4 stroke as they had already killed off the 2 strokes by that time) that I wrote off in an accident, luckily walked away but that was the 'shake' I needed to smarten up and go try to kill myself with other pursuits! (not, I'll add, one I pursue in the 7!)

(regarding the lack of wildlife in your area these days...) May be why M cars are banned in the New Forest? (not true before anyone asks...)

One step ahead of you. I've emptied the pond of water and had them fill it up with vPower. It's good stuff, I swear the fish swim faster on that stuff as well

I'd have thought that's one of the 7's best abilities is to make being stuck in a jam relaxing? Not like I'll be able to hammer it while running it in so casual driving even in jams would be fine. However even if they get it in 26th they might want a day or two to get it sorted with tracker and such. So guessing it'll likely be the week after but we'll see.

Yeah they'll want to register it this month though to get it on their books for the quarter but no problems with that.

Come on you've a 7. I'm sure you can get a bike without selling the house vs a car you can get a lot of power for not a lot of cash. Not done the bike thing though for the reasons you've said, I feel it's just a bit too dangerous.

True, it is great for that and compared to the M5 would be heaven in a traffic jam...on the other hand...the paint would take a hit as the daggers other drivers will be giving you will start to peel or darken it...

Figure of speech! I should never be allowed to get on a bike again and indeed, it is deadly, had many friends and instructors killed (either due to stupid mistakes or just accidents) so the danger far outstrips the pleasure at this stage in life...but the feeling of freedom, acceleration and braking is unmatched in my experience and pay grade, still not worth it as you say, risk is too high, its why many bikers eventually go over to cars if they live. Like a moth to a flame though, if a big engine, 2 stroke machine ever did see the light of day, I'd have to get it...may just park it, fire it up in the yard and stare at it...but luckily, climate reasons are also against it so I'll be safe in the knowledge it will never happen.

The 760 is a nice realistic 'dream' machine these days, maybe in a few years (if it's still around and we're still in the UK) when I've done the travelling I still want to do and is a higher priority for me right now and am willing to divert any extra funds to a car instead, let's see what life throws at us...I'd like to live in at least one more country with a different culture and language to learn before we ultimately settle down somewhere...Appreciate that you and others will have a better financial situation that allows you to have the car and eat your cake too...and good on you, we're happy but a bit more constrained, not complaining though, we've got it good!

What feature are you most looking forward to in the new car FastLaneJB?

You know I've learnt not to look at other drivers generally as they do like a good stare to be honest. It also means you avoid seeing them motioning that they want a race in their 1 litre 3 cylinder Golf

I'm not super wealthy or anything so don't want you getting the wrong idea. Just live in a cheap part of the country considering it's distance to London but work for a London firm so get London type wage is all. But yes I must confess it's been hard telling my boss each year I'm underpaid because I only have 1 new super saloon.

If the 760 had a finance deal like most makes I'd not have got one. As an example a 911 Turbo S comes in around the same value for the car but the monthly payments are double what you'd pay on the 760 before you even glance at the options list. It's just a cracking deal is all.

I'd also say if your doing a lot of mileage for work it'll depend on how they cover that. If your getting the lower company car rates they only go up to a 3 litre car, you'd never cover the fuel costs. Also for places that pay 45p a mile thats enough but you only get that tax free for up to 10k miles, after that it's down to 25p a mile. I imagine will be making a little bit of a loss per mile there as well.

Still I'm not in this without the obvious knowledge it's going to cost me for the privilege. However it is a nice privilege I'm prepared to pay for to have as I do love a nice motor

Well I want to try some of the stuff I've yet to have a go with. Laser lights, night vision and sky lounge at night would probably be the obvious ones as only had it during the day. Basically get it out at night to see it in all it's illuminated glory

Agreed, we're not long for this mortal coil so best to enjoy it the first and only time around...you never know when your time is up. Carpe Diem my friend.

by the way, you've probably googled and watched ever 760 video going but I loved this one for the sheer fun of it, rather than a technical walk through, I have seen a few of his videos on the M2, m140 etc....Hope you haven't seen it and that it whets your appetite for your car...(must be so nice to be able to say that! )
