At that speed he'd have been gone if he stayed on it.

Curious what flavor of Camaro he has. 171 is pretty fast. Hopefully he was in the middle of nowhere with no one on the road. It Looks like the officer was nice and only ticketed him versus beating and arresting him, and then impounding the vehicle so I assume it was middle of nowhere.

How very true, the outcome of running usually ends up in crashing in my experience.

At 171, if you noticed the cop, by the time he reacts, you're a mile down the road. by the time he radios, 2 miles, and you could pull over and never be caught. Anything over 120 the cop can't distinguish what kind of car it was, just color, and they can't get you on that. Plate reader, if equipped on that charger will not be able to read a plate except under 100% ideal conditions, line of sight, weather, etc.

This is sort of like how when cops turn on their lights for sport bikes, they take off never to be caught. He should have kept going. Parked it out back somewhere close by, waited for darkness, crept home, and parked it for a week.

The page says an ISS Camaro. WTF is that? A stock SS, will not do 171. Maybe it's a Zl1? Must be.

Popular Mechanics did 174.4 MPH in the last gen Camaro SS with the limiter removed. The new one should easily do that too with the limiter removed.

Insurance Cost

I will bet his insurance is much more than $103.75 listed by Edmunds after that ticket.

My guess he is a local with "ties" that will get him off--otherwise as you all have stated, they would have never caught him.

With resources like choppers etc that police have, it'd be pretty stupid to try and run.

Yeah I will take my chances with that. How on will that take? Don't run for 300 miles. Just until clear.

Here's why you're wrong:

1) At 171 MPH the car will probably be out of sight in a few seconds.
2) They're not gonna get the plates, or a good enough description to of the car to do anything if they DID find the car again. They need to be positive it was the same car.
3) Cops don't expect to catch people who blow past them going mid triple digits. What they expect, if anything, is a crash.
4) You don't need to be going fucking 170+ for the previous 3 to work lol

Cars outrun the police ALL THE TIME, ALL OVER the country. They don't show it on the news and it's not something I advocate, but it's a reality.

And as far as helicopters go, even in a city that loves them like LA you're unlikely to get the chopper on you unless you:

1) have committed a more serious crime than blazing speed
2) can't get away, refuse to pull over, drag chase on for huge length of time

They use a helicopter here but it doesn't even BEGIN to make a dent in the people racing and doing top speed runs on the freeways by my house.

Going by a cop at 171 mph I would have gotten off at the next exit, picked a direction, gone somewhere and parked and waited a really long time (maybe even left the car somewhere and taxi'd home).

I don't think I am "fleeing" until I know there is someone trying to stop me and at 171 mph, cop at a stop, I think I am a really long way ahead when he is just hitting 60 mph.

Lol you guys make it sound like Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift. Han; "if you drive over a ___ mph, police don't bother following'.

The cop went up to 13x mph to let the guy the know he was behind him so clearly the cop had the car in sight. If the guy is showing no signs of slowing down, how long would it take the cop to call in a chopper and give the location of the car he's following? After that, there isn't much the car is going to be able to do lose the chopper.

based on what ive seen its up to cops discretion, they may chase you or they may not even bother (lets say a street race) just so no one is in harms way they wont conduct a chase. my question is how close do they have to be to capture your plate

I dont think they can catch up. With that speed hes almost 2 miles away in half minute. Thats the time it will take the police to read the radar, go to car and start. Even cop reaches 140 mph car will be 3-4 miles ahead and keep going, how you will even hear or see police car from 4 miles?
