Tesla Trial to Size Up Cause of Fatal Autopilot Crash: Driver or Tech
April 8, 2024 Tesla is preparing for one of the biggest tests of its driver-assistant Autopilot: defending the company’s position that drivers, not the automaker, are ultimately responsible for crashes that involve the technology. In a wrongful-death suit set for trial this week, a jury will determine who is at fault in the 2018 fatal crash involving 38-year-old Apple engineer Walter Huang. The driver died on Highway 101 in California after his Model X sport-utility vehicle crashed into a highway barrier while he was using Tesla’s driver-assistance technology. Tesla says Huang is responsible because he was playing a videogame while the vehicle was engaged in Autopilot. Government investigators and the Huangs agree that he was distracted in the moments leading up to the crash, but the family says Tesla is at fault because of its marketing of Autopilot. https://archive.is/eM0dj#selection-6027.0-6031.200 |

Tesla Settles Over Fatal Autopilot Crash on Eve of Trial
(Bloomberg) -- Tesla Inc. reached a settlement on the eve of its highest-profile trial yet over a crash involving Autopilot, the driver-assistance system Elon Musk has billed as crucial to his pursuit of self-driving cars. Terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed in court filings made public Monday in state court in San Jose, California. The trial would have featured testimony from several current and former Tesla engineers. The settlement comes as Musk has vowed to unveil Tesla’s robotaxi on Aug. 8, four months from now. As electric vehicles become more mainstream, Tesla’s push into artificial intelligence and autonomous driving has been key to its lofty valuation. Beyond their claims against Tesla, the Huangs also alleged that California’s transportation department was partly to blame for failing to fix the barrier that had recently sustained damage from another crash. Had it been repaired, they said, it might have absorbed the impact of the Model X collision and saved Walter Huang’s life. The court’s docket indicates that the claims against the highway department are still pending. https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news...dc48b311&ei=32 Moral of this story is in America you can be very stupid, ignore the law and get very rich but you'er are still dead. |

If you are a middle income family with a baby and the Li battery goes boom with no warranty then you are srrewed, she says.
If you like rock or any music loud in your EV, with a/c on of course, then the range decreases even more..with using WOT, the colder it gets has you worrying and should you break down for no reason then a new nightmare begins as EV can't be moved by normal breakdown procedure and is electric shock risk except for specialised EV handler who has to switch the battery off before somehow loading the over-heavy POS onto a low loader. * oh to add the incapacitated EV can't be towed. The list continues more and more as people who didn't realize, as she says, are handing them back for gas cars and the forecourts are getting fuller by the minute of unwanted EV's. People starting to point out the Insanity in Green Insanity, but will it make any difference? The Green Insanity isn't just spackling intermittent wind and solar on top of the grid, they are dismantling the grid it is being spackled onto!

You would think that, given the cost of living and the exodus already underway from the Golden State, nobody would be trying to make California more expensive than it already is. According to a Wednesday report from The Associated Press, an environmentalist group called Friends of the Earth is suing the U.S. Department of Energy over its decision to award funds to keep California's last remaining nuclear power plant, Diablo Canyon, open. The DOE awarded $1 billion to keep the plant open past its planned 2025 closure date after Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom said shuttering Diablo Canyon, which provides 9 percent of the state's power, would leave California vulnerable to blackouts, according to regional conservative outlet The Center Square. California the "Crash Test Dummy" of stupid ideas is always on the cutting edge of dumb. |

Once a function or activity is automated, human nature pretty much dictates that the function or activity will not be supervised. Same goes for driving. Partially automate it and attention levels drop to near zero. Isn't it easier to drive a car than watch it drive? It is for me. |

Let's be clear though, the state of California is not the one trying to close the nuclear plant, it's Friends of the Earth which is headquartered in DC. This lawsuit isn't going anywhere and neither is the plant so this story is meaningless to this EV thread.

The article is very clear but since you ask
New proposal challenges Gavin Newsom’s $1.4 billion plan to keep Diablo Canyon open There’s a new proposal to keep Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant on the path to close down its reactors in 2024 and 2025. It comes in opposition to draft legislation floated by Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office to keep the plant in San Luis Obispo County running another decade. The latest proposal, which is unsigned and titled the “clean, diverse, safe and reliable energy proposal,” was authored by members of the California State Assembly and released on Aug. 19. https://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/l...264782049.html |

Oddly, the Cali regulators I've worked with are some of the brightest, knowledgeable, down to earth, and well-trained professionals I've ever come across though. But they aren't the ones making the laws. Air and water are their biggest concerns and rightly so. SoCal is still under a blanket of smog, though far less dangerous than even 10 years ago and especially compared to 30+ years ago. You can still see the smog layer clearly when flying into LA even now. Pretty crazy, IMO. Smog is a huge health issue for SoCal, but not so much elsewhere in the state, thus a one size fits all approach is rather silly, IMO. Water availability/scarcity is a huge issue as well thus the reason why they are have so rules surrounding it. Water availability, not air, is and will be the state's biggest environmental issue over the next 50 years. The rules surrounding water usage and rights are bonkers in CA. The agriculture industry and population in SoCal are largely the problem. The growth of both is not sustainable and is a major problem and critical.
