BMW Recalling 230,000 Cars and SUVs for Potential Faulty Takata Airbags

BMW is recalling more than 230,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. to replace potentially dangerous Takata airbag inflators.

The automaker says the vehicles may have had a driver’s air bag replaced with a Takata inflator after a crash or in a previous recall. The vehicles originally were built with inflators made by another company. The recall affects the 3 Series from 2000 to 2002, the 5 Series from 2001 and 2002, and the X5 from 2001 to 2003.

Takata airbag inflators can explode with too much force and spew shrapnel into drivers and passengers. At least 16 deaths and more than 180 injuries have been blamed on the problem worldwide. In the U.S., 19 automakers are recalling 69 million inflators in what has become the largest automotive recall in the nation’s history.

BMW said it discovered the problem in late November after a customer inquired about the maker of the inflator in their 3 Series sedan. The company found that between 2002 and 2015, about 14,600 Takata air bag modules were shipped to the U.S. to be used as replacement parts.

BMW hasn’t been able to determine which vehicles received the Takata parts, so it decided Jan. 19 to do the recall “in an abundance of caution.” Dealers will inspect the air bag systems and replace them if they were made by Takata. Owners will be notified starting March 15.

So the grand total for BMW is now 1 million vehicles.

Really curious as to how and when BMW is going to get this recall done.

To put it into perspective, it's almost been a full year since the recall affecting 840,000 BMWs (E7x, E8x, E9x) and I've still yet to see any of these recall procedures performed.

It's not just a BMW issue. There are literally dozens of manufacturers that are doing the same thing at the same time. This will take several years to work itself out for each manufacturer.

I've been calling my SA weekly regarding the E70. Online it says there is a "Final Remedy Available" November 2016. Then in the SA's system they can't order the parts and have zero visibility to when this will be fixed.

This Zone A vs Zone B deployment is aggravating also.

It's been far too long for the "supply chain" to get this resolved. Every day that goes by is another reason I may not decide BMW in the future.

Blame TAKATA bro.. not BMW.

Name the manufacturer of a vehicle you want to buy that that doesn't have takata airbags in it being recalled.

^^ this. My wife's 2007 Mercedes C230 was also included in the recall. Just sold the car but provided the new owner with the recall notice so they can get it corrected.

I just found an article on Bloomberg.

This newest 230,000 invoices vehicles that have already been repaired. They originally had Petri airbags and The parts used for replacement were also defective and were also supplied by TAKATA. Apparent TAKATA also bought Petri in 2000 and began using TAKATA inflators.

This is why a monopoly is bad. TAKATA supplied inflators to most of the market and also bought up its competitors in the process. There are THIRTY manufacturers involved in this situation. Tens of millions of vehicles affected.. and 13 million repaired..

I would recommend you ease up on your SA... there are 1,568,247 BMWs that have been recalled.

I got my e93 airbag replaced 2 weeks ago from the previous recall, this isn't a new one is it? I hope I don't need to take it in again

I sold my E46 M3 shortly after having the recall performed on the driver side airbag.
Months later I received a notice that the passenger side airbag was also being recalled. I notified the new owner.

Honda is 10x worse.

We have had airbag recalls for at least 10 years now. First a recall, then an inspection, then they started recalling the recalled airbags, and now we are replacing everything again. Our own shop is doing 30-40 every day.

Some early Civics/ELs have been in the shop 4-5 times for driver's side airbag recalls.

Now we just got notice for a further expansion for passenger airbags.

Some days I feel like a bomb disposal tech.

Airbag, schmabag...I'm still waiting for them to recall my rod bearings and throttle actuators...the folks at BMW told me to just hold my breath, but I'm about to turn blue...

Dealt w/ this in my Mazda, before trading it in on the 228. Personally I feel like this should be something that is addressed at a higher level - last I heard, Takata was crying about not having production capacity to replace these, but that is b/c they are also still selling new ones. Likewise, the manufacturers have somehow gotten a pass to allow dangerous vehicles to just drive about until they finally decide to fix them. Perhaps there is some way to put pressure on them to put all the efforts into fixing the problem - if it costs them business, then so much the better (those 'free market forces' everyone is so hot to bring back). If the US legislated that they can't sell any new, until the old ones are replaced, and made them offer loaners until it happened, then I bet they would find a way with a quickness. I suspect that right now the manufacturers are glad to keep it as hushed as it can be, given the scope.

FWIW, I got my Mazda bag replaced rather quickly by bypassing the recall process and pressuring the service manager to order the part directly. They wanted to wait for the routine process where they give you a recall number and then que you up for your turn (telling me they had not received the allocation of recall #'s and corresponding airbag units). Apparently they can (or could) order them as a regular repair part through a separate pipeline. Probably so that they can repair newer cars and keep acting like everything is normal.

Speaking of Mazda, my old 2007 mazda6 gt was taken cared of within the year. Mazda even pinged me to bring my 10 year old rx8 in for airbag replacement which was done within 3 months.
