Low oil pressure engine shut down

hey guys, I had an accident and crushed my oil cooler. The car was towed and when they tried to unload the car it was jumped started and the engine was running as they haven't noticed that oil cooler was broken. The car was running fine and after a min or so message appeared low oil pressure and the engine shut down. The question is whether BMW has some sort of a safety shut down if it detects low oil or this could be serious engine damage?
