Display Key

Question....

I have a 2016 BMW 750 MSPORT, I had my local dealer trade for it and forgot to make sure it came with a display key. Unfortunately it didn't. Is is possible to purchase one from my local dealer and have it programmed?

Thanks

Its ok but most of the time you will carry the normal fob. And you have to periodically charge it as well. Mine stays at home virtually all the time

If you have the self parking feature the key is not so stupid. I thought it was all gimmickery until I had to get my car out of a narrow garage opening. The display key as the controller was easy to use and I was surprised at how close the car can come to a door column on either side. I carry the display key when I think I might need the parking feature. Otherwise the regular keys are easier.

While I understand your point, he has a '16 and if you have self parking you have the display key already. So...stupid gimmick for most owners.

I can't imagine really using the self park feature. I don't even use the auto park feature from inside the vehicle. Different tastes.

I don't use auto park either, and getting into my narrow garage door opening is something I do myself. It is, however, very cool to be able to stand to the side (it is a 2 gar garage but with 2 doors) and start the car and have it back itself out. Fun is part of the equation too.

Hey guys, sorry this is an old thread.

I'm looking at a 2018/2019 750ix and would like to find one with the self park feature and the display key option. What option code should I be looking for and what could I do to validate in the car to make sure that option is there?

I know both sides of the coin on the gimmick factor but I have a narrow garage and I basically sold my wife on this feature bc she's dented the doors due to the narrow opening and now my 911 Turbo is it's garage mate and she's super paranoid.

You will be able to order a key only for your car's VIN ...

BTW, I have some experience in ordering a DisplayKey because I dropped my key and the display broke, the cost of a new key is 650€ with parking function.

- The coding procedure is that we open the car with any working key assigned to our car.
- We leave with the key assigned to the distance so that the contact of the old key with our car is not possible and it does not interfere with the contact of the new key with our car
- We go back to our open car with our new key and touch it to the steering column in the side where the key symbol is
- Keeping the key to the steering column touched in this way, press and hold the engine start button by 15-20 sec
- We receive confirmation of the new key coding on the display in our car / That's it

The prices of the keys are different depending on the honesty of the dealers, I checked three different dealers ...

- First, valued a key exchange at 1,805€ (because he wanted to replace the body domain controller unit in my car and the coding costs + new DisplayKey)
- Second, he estimated the cost of the key at 750€ including encoding
- Third, checked my documents and car documents, he collected 650€ and after 2 days he handed over a new key with the coding procedure.

Some people think that if a man drives a 7 series, he shits money twice a day ...

Have any of you who have the display key had the issues this guy mentions. He was doing an aftermarket install of what appears to be a BMW display key. Found it once turned his car off while driving, and had security issues, also required really frequent charging. Also claimed the comfort access was not the same comfort access as a regular key fob. Also, for some reason, had to have a regular key fob permanently hidden in the car somewhere, to make it work at all.

That was a follow up video to a aftermarket display key he installed in his f30

Got back home and it paired up as described above. Had to move the key a bit to get it to pair, but no problems. It told me to press the brake to start the car. It also set the time on the key. Thanks.

I did my display key thru the dealer, let them “program” it for me. Just wanted to play ball for something not too expensive so they would respond to some of my possible odd requests in the future. Are you saying you simply did the basic key pairing like any other BMW key and it will show you all the connected stuff and back up your car?

Yes, just like any other key, as described above. And it works fully.

Not worth it. I had 1 when i got the 7 and used once. Took the car for a service and they messed it up . i asked for cash instead of a new display key. £560 in my pocket and bought a used one on ebay for £130 and had coded for free by BMW Sidcup. Now I have 2 normal keys and not afraid of damaging that tiny screen.

Are you sure you had a used Display key programmed? Because that is not possible. You can either buy a brand new kew from bmw or switch your internals from your old ket to your used key. As far as I know there is no solution for programming used BDC2 keys yet.

The used one from ebay was a standard key and not a display key.

It is not possible to re-code a used display-key to another car

At the moment no one can do it and the BMW engineers has secured all the display-keys with a special chip that can only be encoded once, and in case of a mistake during the coding process, even the BMW dealer has to send back the display-key and order a new one, really new.

Display-keys from eBay are good at dose parts and motherboard is useless and irreversibly coded. All display-keys on eBay are keys that were previously attached to a car(and they may not be used but have already been coded to some car), Because if it was otherwise, you code such a key as described below for any BMW car and leave as your own. However, it would only be possible once with this display-key

All offers on eBay bear the information that it is not possible to code these keys again. If an offer is not described this way, it is just not an honest seller counting on someone's technological ignorance and easy earnings.

This is the only possible way to encode a display-key

- The coding procedure is that we open the car with any working key assigned to our car.
- We leave with the key assigned to the distance so that the contact of the old key with our car is not possible and it does not interfere with the contact of the new key with our car
- We go back to our open car with our brand new key and touch it to the steering column in the side where the key symbol is
- Keeping the key to the steering column touched in this way, press and hold the engine start button by 15-20 sec
- We receive confirmation of the new display-key coding on the dash in our car / That's it
