Strange warning picture on dash and HUD

Good Morning,

A few days ago I was driving under normal conditions when all of a sudden a picture of a red car popped up on my HUD and also the same picture replaced the clock on the Dashboard..I think I might have heard a bong ( not sure ) as the picture only lasted a few seconds then went away.

Has anyone come across this before ? I've googled this but can't find any reference to it

Thanks in advance for any help

Si

You were following another vehicle too closely. That's the warning symbology.

No it's not that, the warning in HUD for following too closely is the behind of a car with a warning triangle which is all in white. I'm not sure that symbol comes up in place of the clock

Also there was nothing in front if me

BTW, the car symbol I saw was the side of a car with a red outline ( not filled in )

It's your collision detection warning.

The larger the red car in the hud, the more acute the warning.

Gets a reply as to what the symbol was.
Denies it.
Noice.
They are correct your Collision mitigation system has 3/4 steps
First pops up a car alerting you are following to close that a collision is possible
from that point the car will flash.
then a auditory tone will sound and the car 1 second before impact will start setting the car up for impact.
IE seat belt tensions will pull taut, brakes will begin to activate to minimize damage of the crash.

It happened to me in my i8 , different cars but same symbol , it was raining heavily with no other cars around me , I think those sensors got wet and threw false reading

Oh, OK

I only "Denies it" because I wasn't near any other vehicles so it must have been a glitch and of course I've never seen it before.

Thanks for clarifying guys

I always questioned why BMW doesn't actually stop the car if it is ready to crush.
Now I know. I false alarm causing sudden braking would be extremely dangerous

They only apply the brakes at the last second. Same for pedestrian mitigation
BUT if you have a G30 5 series it CAN actually stop the car at speeds below 30 MPH
so in parking lot situations
