Wheel "Dirt" - Not Brake Dust

Does anyone know why "dirt" accumulates on the edges of my wheels? It is not brake dust and it looks almost as though rubber is rubbing off from the tires and onto the wheels, but it does not happen around the entire edge of the wheel, just at certain spots here and there. Easily washed off. Thanks.

Do you use any tire shine?

No, I purposely do not because the wheels get dirty more quickly and I understand it's not good for the tires in general (dry rot, etc., albeit unlikely due to the longevity of our high performance, low profile tires).

Do you happen to have a picture to show what you are talking about (in reference to your spots on the rims...)?

That's normal and is due to tire flex, for example you're taking a curb or turn harder than normal, or your are driving over a steep edge/bump or you hit a pot hole, etc. Basically anytime the sidewall is is deformed to the point it hits the edge of the rim.

You are welcome.

I also see this once in a while on my rims... It also depends on what style rims you have, what brand (shape/design) of tire and your driving style...

What style rims do you have? Are they 301I?

Yes, I have the 20" Style 301 wheels with the Goodyear Excellence tires. Thumbs down on the tires; although, there is an Individual with the Pirelli PZero tires that is ALWAYS at my dealer for a blown tire; the car is supposedly on its 15th replacement tire in six months!? How that is possible, I do not know!! Woman who drives it states she never experienced one blown tire on her prior car, a 2009 S550.
