Grand Tour First Episode Was...

Amazing. So well done. Completely lived up to high expectations. So excited for the rest.

The production value is through the roof! The video equipment they're using and the budget is insane. 4K HDR video!! If you're a video geek, rejoice. Much better on all fronts compared to even their old Top Gear shows.

Let's see if they can keep it up. Amazon is known for big gaps between seasons for their shows... I would very much like them to keep making the show continuously.

There's 36 episodes over three years contracted for with Amazon, with an option to continue. There definitely will be big gaps. That's only 12 episodes per year, 40 weeks with no new episodes per year. For this season, Amazon plans on 12 weeks of new episodes.

It was perfect. That M2 looked pretty good going around the new test track. Eboladome.

If you liked top gear you will love grand tour... Grand tour is top gear with the comp package. Bigger budget, better cars, better production all together.

I was thinking the same thing. They couldn't get a real driver instead of some inbred hillbilly who does nothing but make typical redneck jokes about the cars he is driving because it's not 'Murican muscle?

YES.

I think having that lard ass NASCAR driver perform the track test invalidated the test results... He's no Stig, that's for sure.

Looks like Mike Skinner has been the pole sitter at the Daytona 500. Can't drive?

Yeah, um, Mike Skinner was a NASCAR driver for well more than 20 years. He even won the Truck Series championship one year. (Driving a Toyota, by the way).

(And no offense ... but I'm 100 percent certain that Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt fall under your stereotype as well. So a man's gotta be ultragentrified to be a good driver? Please.)

I'm no NASCAR fan, but I'm pretty sure Skinner can hold his own. Besides: his skill is only one reason why he was hired. His "hillbilly" point of view is another.

I don't give a shit about his driving abilities. He is the exact stereotype of what European's think of American's. They are just perpetuating the rumour that we are all inbred southerners who talk with a twang and sleep with our sisters. THIS is why he was hired. There are plenty of equally (or more) competent drivers that won't make Europeans think even less of us. His commentary was mediocre at best, and just gave me the impression that he was there to make American's look as stupid as other countries think we are.

This is why the Stig can't be replaced. He wasn't allowed to have an opinion. Hell, he didn't even have a face. Just pure driver, with no commentary, criticism or critique, whether it be good or bad. That is how he was intended to be. The least they could've done is hire an unbiased driver like Tanner Foust who will say good things about the car they are driving when there is clearly something good to be said, rather than "this ain't no 'Murican muscle, **ter-her-her**"

As long as Skinner can drive well and set lap times I don't give a shit what he says or whose sister he sleeps with. I think people who are overly sensitive and easily offended by stereotypes shouldn't be watching anything with Jeremy Clarkson in the first place.

Tanner Foust? You can't be serious. He's persona non grata from Day One because Top Gear U.S. was a such a massive fail. I don't care if he had 15 World Championships in five different racing leagues; in the context of the show and the niche, he's not an option.

You aren't acknowledging (either through ignorance or narrow thinking; I'm not sure) that a massive part of the entertainment value of Top Gear, The Grand Tour, etc. is its humor, a large part of which is based on stereotypes. That's the No. 1 reason Top Gear was so popular -- viewership went far, far beyond gearheads. (Most of the time Top Gear got in trouble with its content was because of stereotypes, fer cryin' out loud!) Skinner personifies an extremist stereotype -- like it or not, it's not just Euros who think this way; many Americans do, too, particularly because of the NASCAR connection, and that's why the potential for humor is so great -- while at the same time providing a baseline for testing cars. That's his role. It's humor. Let it happen.

Oh, and Tanner Foust has the personality of a Ken Burns documentary. Like I said: not an option.

The opinions of Skinner are the same reason why I like Clarkson. Outspoken in the stereotypical sense. It's comedy and I laughed. Great episode and I'm so excited the boys are back together again. I really enjoyed watching Clarkson stir up trouble between the Porsche and McLaren guys.

You're wrong here, too: The Stig provided humor and opinion through his actions, mystique, and second-hand anecdotes from both the cast and Stars in a Reasonably Priced Car. No face or words were necessary because he, too, filled a stereotype: the emotionless, machine-like, get-it-right-every-time ideal ANY great driver aims for when behind the wheel ...

... with a soft spot for classic music no matter what the genre, from Mahler to Jethro Tull. Again: stereotypes at play ... and it was DAMNED funny.

I have no idea what show all of you were watching but the Grand Tour I saw was stale and humorless. The whole thing was wooden.
And testing the three hypercars is a year behind the times.
I hope its better next episode. They need Chris Harris.
