'15 Alpina B7 vs. '17 750i
Hey all. Haven't posted in a while. I sold my '16 750 back in March. I'm considering getting another 7. I loved my last car and it treated me well. For about the same money I can get a 2015 B7 or a 2017 750 with similar mileage.
Purely from a driving dynamics standpoint which one will be a more fun driver? Reliability? I assume the 2017 gets a leg up on tech with CarPlay. Any other considerations? I will run snows on separate wheels in either case in case that would be a concern. Appreciate the thoughts of this group. My budget is around $45k tops. |

It’s tough to use reliability on a BMW website as criteria.
I think Alpinas are true special cars for all sorts of reasons. |

2015 B7 will definitely drive better. Both are not the most reliable vehicles after 50k miles with that V8 engine.

My primary issue is that I don't want to get into someone's deferred maintenance headache. I know stuff goes wrong. I can live with that. I just don't want to have to plow $5k into something to get it up to baseline. I have an '01 E39 for that. |

I’ve had two 2001 e38’s. Might have been my favorite cars ever, but far from the most reliable. I just don’t get people who want to talk about reliability with German cars. It’s so easy - you want a car with spirit, buy German. You want reliable but soulless, buy Japanese. We all know this is the deal.

I would go for the B7 for that extra exclusivity factor.

Having driven both and gone from one to the other side by side, I chose a 2018 750ii xDrive with 19,000 miles over a 2019 B7 with 29,000 miles. They are both awesome cars. The B7 is pretty sweet, but it wasn’t worth the extra $38,000 dollars to me. Would it have been worth an extra $15,000 for the exclusivity to me? Perhaps. Additionally, my BMW service department manager said the reliability was equal in his experience.

On serious note I've never had a BMW let me down over 13 of them over 20 years and over 750,000 miles, I've never experienced their unreliability.

One exception to that rule of new cars was my first 7 series and I regretted it as it wasn't right something was off with it so I sold it on after 12 months. (you always run that risk when buying used) The only car I've ever bought that I didn't like was an F31 335d xdrive perfectly reliable just not my cup of tea. You can only speak as you find and I've always found my BMWs to be reliable, I've got a 14 year old Z4C on drive that I've owned since new and its still going strong.

My big sedan dreams were smashed for the time being.
Appreciate all the input! We settled on a 2015 MB GL550. I'm pretty excited about it. I would have liked to go X7 but the prices haven't come down at all yet with the market the way it is. Family sized rocket ship that can tow. Should be fun! |
