BMW 7 Series ActiveHybrid production photos and specs

Badged ActiveHybrid X6 and ActiveHybrid 7, the two cars use V8 petrol engines, but the X6 features two electric motors while the 7-series has one.

The X6’s drivetrain will produce a combined 478bhp and 575lb ft, which makes it the most powerful hybrid in the world, according to BMW.

That’s enough to enable the car to reach 62mph in 5.6sec, just 0.2sec slower than the xDrive50i. BMW also claims combined fuel consumption of 28.5mpg, with CO2 emissions of 231g/km. The car can also run on electric power only at up to 37mph for 1.6 miles.

BMW has attempted to differentiate the ActiveHybrid X6 from a regular X6 with the addition of what it calls a powerdome on the bonnet — a bulge in the sheetmetal — and it comes in a new metallic blue available only on this model.

However, all this additional technology means the ActiveHybrid X6 weighs in at 2450kg, making it 185kg heavier than a standard V8 X6. Its maximum permissible vehicle weight is 3100kg.

The 7-series is less powerful, with 459bhp and 561lb ft, but faster, cleaner and more fuel efficient. It hits 62mph in 4.9sec, returns 29.1mpg and emits 219g/km of CO2. It’s not a full hybrid, though, and can’t run on the electric motor alone; it’s just a back-up for the V8.

The electric motor and its ancillaries are similar to those used in the Mercedes S400 hybrid — BMW and Daimler co-developed the tech — and it uses lithium ion batteries.

Like the S400, neither BMW will be available in the UK, due to the cost of re-engineering for right-hand drive and the limited appeal of vehicles with large petrol engines here. “Eighty-five per cent of X6s and 90 per cent of 7-series sold in the UK are diesel-powered,” said a BMW source. “And both hybrids are petrol-based, so they’re a niche within a niche.”

Nice. This should steal sales from the LS460h easily.

I'd buy one for the family. The current 750i is getting a little long in the tooth. Any info on an ETA?

I wonder whether it will be available in both SWB and LWB versions. Are the photos SWB?

Best regards.

The photos are LWB. I knew it, when BMW would get to hybride, they would make the most sporty and powerfull cars, and here they are. The Lexus and the S400 hybride are nothing compared to this 7, well have to wait for the tests. BMW also had a comcept of a diesel hybride, the X5. And at the IAA there will be a, hope so, a clean hybride sportscar.

Hybride 7 from 0 to 100 km/h in only 4.9 sec, even faster than 750i!!!!!!
Imagine the next 5 series hybride, Hybride 5 or 555ih, it will be lighter than the 7, so it may go 0-100 km/h in 4.7 sec, as fast as the M5 E60 with its 5.0l V10 507 hp. Imagine the next M5, in 4.0 sec???!!!!! Byebye E63 AMG, RS6 and CTS-V. Can't wait for the next 5 series.

This is considered a "mild" hybrid, just like the new S400. They both produce the same ultimate result, with a different approach.

The pictures definitely show the LWB version. No indication if they use an xDrive system in the AH7 though...

The "active hybrid 7" logo on the C pillar looks silly. Having it on the trunk is enough.

They put it right above the fuel filler cap so that you remember to only fill up the car with 'Hybrid' gas

I agree though, it looks silly and is totally redundant, not to mention anything like that makes the car that much harder to clean or keep clean!

Why should it be useless? It is the exact right way. The Americans & Saudis some people all over the globe can keep their ridiculous big engines and will use less fuel doing so. If you can't re-educate people to use less resources, one has to do it this way.
Don't get me wrong, I l o v e big engines, but in a country with speed limits it is as much overkill as a Machine Gun in a bar fight. I hope no one is offended, just replying to above comment.

The hydrogen car will come as soon as very important people with tons of money will allow it.

It is another fine piece of engeniering presented by BMW. This is what makes me enjoy working for them.

Hybrid technology seems pretty useless in terms of the overall energy picture. Think of all the extra energy and resources it takes to build a hybrid car versus a straight up gasoline or diesel vehicle. Now think about much people will really drive this vehicle. Do you think it will actually recover the extra energy required to produce it in fuel savings?

The other issue is this... even with the hybrid technology on the V8 cars, the 3.0 liter diesel motor is still much more fuel efficient and way simpler to produce and I believe produces few grams of CO2 per km. And, on top of all that and drawing on the previous point, has polluted the earth less in production.

Hybrids are a waste of time, in my opinion. We should be pushing diesel technology in North America much more and also working towards the hydrogen combustion engines and hydrogen fuel cells as an alternate.

Think of these topics in terms of "Energy rate of return."

Any chance they will move this into the other series? A 7 is just too big of a car for me.

While I agree that it's a bit much, I would bet that BMW is doing the same thing that other manufacturers are by playing to the egos of hybrid owners. At least in the USA the manufacturers have been told by their customers that they want hybrids to be more distinctive, with "hybrid" and other "green" badging. I'm sure that some own hybrids for the right reasons, but I'm also sure that many of them do so in an attempt to feel better about themselves.

As for "Americans and their big engines", not everyone here subscribes to that notion. I'd love to see BMW offer their smaller engines, especially the diesels here, but I understand that they're unsure of the market. It would be interesting to see what a diesel-electric hybrid could do. Using some of the same hybrid technology with the 23d engine, a "535d active hybrid" (where the "35" comes from the 23d + electric power) might be attractive. If it got 30+ MPG city and 40+ MPG highway, people would probably be very interested, especially if it had sub-6 second 0-60 performance. Put the same thing in the 1 or 3 series and shoot for 50 MPG, which would totally freak out the Toyota Pious crowd... Or in the X1 and shoot for the 30+MPG/40+MPG mark, which might make it the hottest thing in the stable, at least in the USA.
