Interesting:

http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/2...e-telematics/4

and

http://www.dailywireless.org/2011/12...atics-goes-4g/

Weird the first article broaches the topic by stating "If there’s a working telematics system in the car that has no paid subscription, should the car call for help anyway or let the guy fend for himself?", but fails to expound upon same.

And am I reading this right(?):

2014 and newer model year vehicles have BMW Assist for 10 years!?

I wrote a whole thing on this along with the official bulletins from BMW.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1215687

2014 and newer model year vehicles with the NBT navigation system are based on 3G GSM technology. The NBT Evo platform in the 2016+ models are based on LTE systems so those technologies will be around for some time.

All the CCC and CIC navigation systems are based on CDMA or 2G GSM technologies (depending on generation) which are being shut down by their respective carriers.

BMW is working on a technical upgrade for those still under BMW-paid Assist contracts (contracts as part of new vehicle purchase or CPO purchases) and will release more information middle of the year. However, they haven't said anything about customers who are currently paying year-to-year for their service.

There will be more official information in a couple of weeks. Just hang in there and know there are options coming. It's a complicated job and there will be at least 6 different updates/modifications required depending on the base system and options installed in the specific vehicle.

Recently read this article: http://www.wsj.com/articles/tech-in-...ess-1481976000, which states “BMW and other auto makers already have been forced to offer to retrofit hardware or provide gift cards to those owners who don’t want the hassle of getting an upgrade. BMW owners can accept a $300 voucher for BMW accessories, a $200 Visa gift card or a retrofit of updated cellular technology, the company said.”

Anyone know if the gift card option applies to all owners? I just called corporate and they state they’re not aware of the option, but that retrofit is available free on vehicles within 4 years of their in-service date and that additional retrofit options may become available this spring for purchase for those outside of 4 years of their in-service date.

Doesn’t sound right that retrofit is being covered for some, but not all, as those one day out of 4 years would need to pay and those one day same would not.
