I'll chime in a success story. I met my current girlfriend of 2+ years on POF. As a matter of fact, my last 4 were met online (over the course of 6 years). I've used online dating for about that long and must say if you are a good detective it's the best tool in the world. I have NIGHTMARE stories of dates gone wrong, and women misrepresenting themselves but I learned how to do my homework better over time. My girl now actually is the same age as me (40) and we grew up a town apart but probably never would have met if her daughter (who also chose my profile for her to start talking to, haha) hadn't convinced her to try it. Shes beautiful and smart and funny, not easy to find in one package, believe me I tried! I cant count the number of first dates I went on. Do your research, thats all Im saying!
