BMW i5 Revealed in Patent Images?

BIMMERPOST NEWS
BMW i5 Patent Discovered?
84
COMMENTS

Is this the rumored BMW i5 or some other BMW i concept vehicle? Registered by BMW in Japan, these patent images show a car which looks like it could be the rumored i5, which is supposed to be as long as the BMW i8 but roomier than a 3 Series.

According to rumors published last year, the i5 was speculated to be coming in two forms: electric-only and plug-in hybrid. The EV was said to have a 225-hp rear motor working in tandem with a 135-hp motor up front. A more potent rear motor in the plug-in will be good for about 275 hp, and a three- or four-cylinder engine will drive the front wheels. Torque-vectoring all-wheel drive will be standard.

That article also predicted that the i5 would look like a standard three-box, four-door sedan, not a futuristic vehicle like the current i models. If this these images indeed preview the i5's design, then that prediction was adefinite miss.

Wonder if all the manufacturers met and pledged to make this class/type of car similar to the eyesore Prius.

Looks like a Prius had a baby with a Pontiac Aztec. Dammit.

It's the new BMW Tesla Prius.

But in seriousness, this design aligns with the i3 & i8 offerings and fills the gap between the two current models. I wonder if they share any internal components.

BMW should go the route of Tesla and make electric cars that don't look like EVs.
This looks as ugly as the Gran Turd GT cars.
Did they not learn anything looking at the i3 sales numbers from last month's sales of only 391 cars?

Looks like a i8 ate a 4 door sedan! They tried to get i8 design features and stretch it to fit a 4 door, doesn't work ! Maybe the real car will be better but these leave me kind of cold and clammy.

Or in other words the i8 and i3 had a love child and this was the result lol. Makes sense position wise but I expected better.

Both i3 and i8 look better resolved than this.

I mean look at the charger cap and its proximity to the door! That's just sloppy and bad design ! Their literally crashing into each other !!! Sigh!

Again its a different story in other markets especially with some markets receiving the 94H.
Its an EV a BMWi model therefore it sticks with the philosophy "Born Electric" therefore it is not a conventional car electrified.
There will be EV as will as PHEV models as BMW cover all tastes in the market.

The exterior shape and same goes for other wedge like concept Prius,Iconiq etc..
Is the most optimum for Aerodynamics therefore its shape helps towards more efficiency.

I understand the EV an PHEV but it seems like consumers have voted with their wallets and making EVs that look like EVs aren't working at least in North America or at least BMW 's design of their EVs. Need to go in a new design direction before it is too late. VWs EV at the Paris autoshow looked great though.

Isn't that exactly what this sketch is? Trending back to the mean which is the same Prius/bolt shape, as opposed to striking new ground like the i3...

Are you saying you want to see BMW try and go in *another* new direction ?

Auto manufacturers still don't get it. Aerodynamics is fine but the masses don't want an EV that looks... weird! If Tesla can make a Model 3 (prototype) that doesn't look weird and actually looks decent and sells like hot-cakes doesn't that send a message to BMW, VW, Mercedes etc that if you can actually build a compelling car (rather than trying to create a model for every individual taste in every possible market) people will buy!

I'm not saying the Tesla Model S is the best automotive design ever created (far from) but it's a simple, well executed design and amazing all-electric power train. If it weren't so expensive many more people would adopt the all-electric platform. PHEV isn't the same - I for one do not want an engine in my daily driver unless it was made in the 70's or 80's and in a sports car.

BMW make me a compelling all-electric sedan (some key words there) and people (myself included) will buy. It's proven.

Jesus Christ

It's ironic that in their quest to fill every niche, they miss such an incredibly obvious one (good-looking EV)

This is what they're working on until 2021?

I thought BMW was going to hold off on more i cars for now because they aren't confident that they'll sell.

Anyhow this looks like a Prius and won't sell, just like the turd i3.
